ST. LOUIS — Northern Iowa freshman point guard Maya McDermott was named the Missouri Valley Conference’s Newcomer of the Week after her performance in two women’s basketball games against Indiana State.
McDermott scored a career-high 20 points in Friday’s win over Indiana State without missing a field goal, going 6-for-6 from the field, 3-for-3 from 3-point range and 5-for-5 from the free-throw line in a 95-69 win over the Sycamores. The freshman also added a pair of assists and a block in just 15 minutes on the court.
McDermott followed that performance with nine points and seven assists to lead the Panthers to an 88-53 win over Indiana State on Saturday.
For the weekend, McDermott averaged 14.5 points and shot 75 percent (9-for-12) from the field, 66.7 percent (4-for-6) from distance and 7-for-7 at the free-throw line, while playing only 15.5 minutes per contest.
