Tigers win 4th straight, top Ellsworth

IOWA FALLS — The Marshalltown Community College men’s basketball team was able to withstand a second-half charge from Ellsworth CC to take a 67-62 win on Wednesday night, the fourth-straight Iowa Community College Athletic Conference win for the Tigers.

The Tigers (4-1, 4-1) scored 43 of their 67 points in the first half and used defense to hold on in the final 20 minutes as the team’s offense stalled. The Panthers were held to 37.1 percent shooting from the floor.

Leading the way on offense for MCC was once again Deon’ta Lagway with 23 points on 9-for-20 shooting with four 3-pointers. He added six rebounds. The Tigers only had one more player in double-figures in Di’Ablo Stewart with 10 points. Stewart led the team with five assists, while Nuha Sagnia led the Tigers with nine rebounds.

Ike Sheppard scored eight, and David Roberts Jr. and Zyan Gilmore scored seven points each off the bench.

Tigers fall short in OT

IOWA FALLS — For the first time in 68 games, Ellsworth CC women’s basketball has won a game. It was at the expense of the now 1-4 MCC Tigers.

The Tigers squandered a 48-34 halftime lead to lose 86-83 in overtime to the 1-3 Ellsworth Panthers on Wednesday night.

The Tigers only played eight players and four of them scored 15 or more points. Eva Zaragoza again led the team in scoring with 20 points and eight rebounds. Nuria Castillo hit five 3-pointers and scored 19 points, while Heeni Blakey and Waiaaria Rogers scored 17 points apiece.

Carla Dorta-Perez led the team with seven assists.

Ellsworth shot 54.2 percent from beyond the arc, and the Panthers’ 13 threes were crucial to their comeback.

Up next for MCC is a home game against Iowa Central on Saturday afternoon at the Student Activity Center.
