MHS boys tennis nets 2nd in Johnston Invite

JOHNSTON — Jason Strand won the No. 2 singles flight and the Bobcat boys’ tennis team finished second with 180 points at the Johnston Invite Friday.

The Invite was originally scheduled for April 10, but rain moved it to Friday.

Jason Strand went unbeaten in his flight and only lost four games — winning 7-4, 11-0, 11-0 and 11-0 in his matches.

Kevin Strand took third place in the No. 1 singles flight, losing two matches and winning two. Kevin lost to Pella 8-3 and Johnston 9-2 but beat Boone 7-4 and Norwalk 9-2.

In the doubles flights, Nic Price and Drake Davis tied for second in the No. 1 doubles bracket after losing 7-4 to Pella and 10-1 to Boone. The duo beat Johnston 9-2 and Norwalk 8-3.

Ethan Benscoter and Nile Christensen also finished tied for second in No. 2 doubles, losing 8-3 to Pella and 7-4 to Boone but defeating Johnston 6-5 and Norwalk 11-0. Justin Melde and John Loney took home second in No. 3 doubles with wins over Pella (6-5), Norwalk (9-2) and Boone (8-3) and a lone loss to Johnston (6-5).

The Bobcats host Mason City Thursday afternoon.
