Runner-up finishes help Bobcat girls to third place

WATERLOO — The Marshalltown girls’ track and field team tallied 19 placewinner performances on its way to a third-place finish at Waterloo West’s Wahawk Invitational on Thursday night at Memorial Stadium.

Cedar Falls captured the team title with 168.5 points, followed by Waverly-Shell Rock (136.5) and the Bobcats (115). Meet host Waterloo West was fourth (109) in its seven-team invitational.

Marshalltown’s top result was second-place finishes in six different events. Micah Blevins and Grace Rasmussen finished 2-3 in the 800-meter run, while Rachel Smith and Makenna Ainsworth went 2-3 in the 1,500. Veronica Herrera racked up a runner-up finish in the 3,000, while Mia Rasmusson cleared 4 feet, 8 inches to take second in the high jump.

The Bobcats’ 4×800 and shuttle hurdle relay teams both finished second as well. The quartet of Smith, Blevins, Rasmussen and Ainsworth totaled a time of 10 minutes, 53.46 seconds for the silver in the 4×800, while Rasmusson, Lilly Duff, Valeria Becerra and Sara Huffman compiled a time of 1:12.94 in the shuttle hurdle relay.

Fourth-place finishes went to Grace Collins in the 100, Amaya Moore in the long jump, Duff in the discus, and three Bobcat relays: the 4×200, sprint medley and distance medley. Rasmusson and Lily Roberts finished 4-5 in the 100 hurdles as well.
