SPORTS SHORTS: Bobcat boys track and field competes in Fort Dodge

FORT DODGE — The Marshalltown boys’ track and field team finished fifth in Class A at the Fort Dodge Boys’ Dodger Relays Monday afternoon.

The Bobcats were led by Jaiden Buchanan, who won the 400-meter dash with a time of 52.11 seconds. Buchanan also was second in the 200, finishing in 23.45 seconds. Aidan DeVolder was second in the shot put, tossing it a top distance of 43 feet, 11 inches. Marshal Weeden ran third in the 1,600 with a time of 5:07.38.

Gannon Williams was fourth in the discus with a top throw of 108-2. Dwight Joar was fourth in the high jump with a 5-6 and fifth in the 110 hurdles.

Marshalltown finished fourth in the distance medley relay in a combined time of 4:07.18. The Bobcats also finished fourth in the 4×200 relay, clocking in at 1:42.09.

MHS netters finish off Mason City for Friday sweep

After sweeping Newton 11-0 in the early afternoon hours Friday, the floodlights were up by the time the Bobcats got into the thick of their meet with Mason City at the MHS Tennis Complex. Marshalltown defeated Mason City 8-3 to complete a long, grueling day.

In singles, Kevin Strand beat James Matthews 3-6, 6-4, (10-3) in a tiebreaker. Jason Strand beat up Coden Rodning 6-0, 6-1, while Nicolas Price won 7-6, 6-4. Ethan Benscoter won handily over Justin Yarahmadi 6-1, 6-4.

In doubles, the Strand brothers beat Matthews and Rodning 6-1, 6-4. Nile Christensen and Benscoter won 6-3, 6-1 against Zach Mulholland and Jackson Wickman, Justin Melde and John Loney beat Lane Kruger and Rylan Kuhn 7-5, 6-3, and Colin Schmit and Drake Stalzer won 6-1, 6-2 over Benjamin Lorence and Aidan Thompson.
