Comets too low for G-R girls

Anderson, Beeghly shoot best scores in BCLUW’s NICL West dual win

CONRAD — One BCLUW team mom commented that it was “like the four seasons combined” at Oakwood Golf Course Thursday afternoon for the dual meet between Gladbrook-Reinbeck and host BCLUW.

The Comets were able to weather the changing conditions on their way to a comfortable 206-257 team victory over the Rebels, with the Comets having the top three individual scores as well.

Head coach Stacy Simpson said the team’s consistency among its top three or four golfers has been a big boost lately, and with scores of 50, 50 and 51 in that top three, he had an example at the ready of how much it could help the team as the season starts to hit the stretch run.

“All that experience is starting to pay off for us,” Simpson said. “The girls are starting to put in time on their own after practice and they’re doing weekend stuff on their own, which is beginning to show through.”

Leading the way for BCLUW was freshman Sydney Anderson, who shot a 15-over 50 and defeated fellow Comet freshman Lindsay Beeghly in a card-off. Anderson played mostly bogey golf on the afternoon except for slip-ups on holes 2 and 3, when she went triple bogey-quadruple bogey.

Still, it was another win for Anderson, who has some shoes to fill after following in the footsteps of her big sister Lauren Anderson. Lauren is helping out the team as an assistant coach since Grand View, where she is a junior on the golf team, is on summer break already.

Simpson said that while Sydney does have the family history in her name, she’s gotten herself very motivated throughout the season.

“She’s a self-competitor,” Simpson said. “She’s one of those people who looks at how she’s doing compared to how she did last time, and that to me is meaningful for her.”

Beeghly was able to overcome a first-hole 8 to shoot 50 and tie Sydney. In third place for the Comets was junior Maleah Jones, who played with Sydney and shot a 51 of her own. Jones was able to withstand four scores of 7 to reach her number, something that Simpson is hoping the team can do in 18-hole events.

BCLUW hasn’t played 18 holes in an event this season. Simpson said he has no questions about the team’s physical ability to compete for 18 holes, but he is banking on the team’s strong mentality translating from its regular nine-hole event length.

Brooklyn Backoff shot a 55 to close out the Comets’ counting scores.

On G-R’s end, Paige Creswell led the team with an 18-over 53. She was the only G-R player in the 50s, as Maia McLean shot a 63, Emma Fleshner shot 69 and Lauren Boyer closed out the team’s counting scores with a 72.

Up next for BCLUW is a trip to play Grundy Center Friday afternoon. For G-R, the next meet is the NICL West girls’ golf meet at BCLUW.
