Fifth-ranked Valley carves up Bobcats

WEST DES MOINES — The Marshalltown girls’ tennis team was the first to take a match from West Des Moines Valley in two weeks, but it wasn’t enough for the Bobcats to compete for Thursday’s dual meet.

The Class 2A No. 5 Tigers took down Marshalltown in decided fashion, beating the Bobcats 10-1 to improve to 9-0 this season.

Valley sent 16 different players onto the court, meaning nobody played both singles and doubles, and won at least 10 of 11 matches for the seventh time this season. The Tigers had won their previous three duals by scores of 11-0.

Marshalltown’s lone victory on the night came from the No. 1 doubles tandem of Cassandre Lecompte and Regan Smith, as the Bobcat duo outlasted their Valley counterparts Taryn Guthrie and Veda Amalker 7-5, 2-6, (11-9).

Only one other match made it to three sets, as Marshalltown’s No. 5 doubles team of Grace Bethel and Chesni Uhde rallied to take the second set against Ella Trannel and Nicole Johnson in an eventual 6-1, 3-6, (10-6) defeat.

Valley surrendered no more than four games in any of the other nine matches.

Marshalltown is back in action today with a trip to Ankeny for the 9 a.m. Ankeny Quad including Southeast Polk and Urbandale.
