MHS girls get season’s first victory

Sara Huffman

FORT DODGE — Marshalltown freshman Sara Huffman had a hat trick and the Bobcat girls’ soccer squad snapped the program’s 20-match losing streak with a 5-1 rout of Fort Dodge in Friday’s CIML Iowa Conference match at Dodger Stadium.

The Bobcats (1-12) won for the first time since beating Fort Dodge 1-0 on April 26, 2019. MHS lost the last eight games of that season and the first 12 of this campaign, but that chapter came to an abrupt close in this contest.

All five goals came from freshmen, in fact, as Huffman was joined in the scoring column by classmates Aubrie Tejada and Alexia Garcia in the first half. Huffman scored both second-half goals for the Bobcats, who entered the match with only four previous goals this season.

Callie Tuttle and Garcia each were credited with an assist, while Esme Chavez made five saves in net for the win.

Fort Dodge (0-11) has been outscored 116-2 this spring.

Marshalltown has a daunting week ahead with a road trip to No. 2 West Des Moines Valley on Tuesday and a home match against No. 4 Waukee on Thursday.
