Mustangs’ Hull, WM’s Pinnick earn state berths

STATE CENTER — The East Marshall girls’ track and field team emerged from Thursday’s Class 2A state-qualifying meet with two automatic state qualifiers — and both of them are Ellie Hull.

The Mustang sophomore finished second to Van Meter’s Clare Kelly in both the 800- and 1,500-meter runs to represent all of East Marshall’s automatic berths to next week’s state meet in Des Moines.

Hull scored silver in the 800 in a time of 2:33.30, while her runner-up clocking in the 1,500 was 5:39.32.

She was the area’s only automatic qualifier on the girls’ side, as West Marshall was without a top-two finish in the meet it hosted. The Trojans had third-place finishes from Halie Hohnstein in the long jump, the 4×800, shuttle hurdle and distance medley relays, but will have to await today’s official list of state qualifiers.

The same goes for East Marshall’s Morgan Neuroth, who took third in the 400 hurdles, and Mkenzie Robinson, who placed fourth in the 3,000. Outside of the top two finishers advancing as automatic qualifiers, the next eight best at-large times and distances qualify for state.

On the boys’ side, West Marshall senior Luke Pinnick placed second in the shot put with a heave of 48 feet, 11 3/4 inches to advance to state for the Trojans. He’s the only automatic qualifier for either West or East Marshall.

West Marshall’s Jarrin Goecke collected third place in the 400 in a time of 52.42, while East Marshall’s Joe Terrones was third in the 3,200 (10:23.84).

The Trojans’ distance medley quartet of Grahm Nason, Seth Larsen, Caden Vellinga and Nick Thompson took third (3:50.64), while the Mustangs’ Paul Novotny came in fourth in the discus (125-9).
