Redhawks roll on as team, Callaway secures district advancement
West Marshall’s Luke Vawter moves on in Class 2A golf
BELLE PLAINE — BCLUW junior Ray Callaway earned a berth at Class 1A golf districts Friday at the Belle Plaine Country Club as an individual qualifier, while the North Tama boys’ golf team finished second and qualified as a team with a 370.
The Redhawks were consistent, with all six team scores breaking 100. Aaron Snider set the pace with an 89, while Paden Ketter was close behind with a 91. Michael Schrier and Michael Bell had the final two counting scores for the Redhawks with 95s on the par-72 course. Trent Whitmore shot a 96 and Jack Schafer shot 97.
Callaway had the second-best score from a non-qualifying team, shooting a 91 to make his way onto the next round. Callaway birdied his 12th hole of the day on a par 5. BCLUW was third in the team standings, missing out on a district spot by 10 shots to North Tama.
GMG did not have enough players to qualifying in the team standings, but Zach Duncan shot a 103 and Kooper Gill shot a 119 for the Wolverines.
The qualifiers will play district golf at Pleasant Valley Golf Course in Iowa City Thursday morning.
West Marshall qualifies one
WOODWARD — Luke Vawter’s strong performance gave West Marshall an individual qualifier Friday at Woodward Golf and Country Club.
The Trojans finished with a team score of 347 thanks to Vawter’s 81 — which included a 37 on his first nine holes and was the second-best score from a non-qualifying team — on its way to a third-place finish in the sectional. Following Vawter’s round was an 83 from Joey Tollefson, an 89 from Will Dawley and a 94 from Cael Pfantz.
Vawter will play Thursday in districts at Lincoln Valley Golf Course near State Center, an event hosted by West Marshall.
Mustangs’ season ends
DIKE — East Marshall boys’ golf concluded its season at sectionals Friday at the Fox Ridge Golf Club.
The Mustangs shot a team score of 398 and finished in sixth place at the sectional, which was won by Grundy Center with a score of 325.
Leading the way for East Marshall was Seth Freese with a score of 94. Toby Ryan shot a 99, while Ty Powell scored a 102 and Colton Robinson rounded out the top four scores with a 103. Ethan Lamb shot a 111.
South Tama settles for 6th
KNOXVILLE — The South Tama County boys’ golf team finished sixth in a season-ending sectional held at Pine Knolls Country Club.
The Trojans shot a team score of 360, 50 shots behind winners Knoxville. Leading the way for South Tama was Brayden Smith, who shot a 13-over 83 and finished 11th in the individual standings. Kaden Kopsa shot a 90 and was in a tie for 15th in individual rankings. Lane Lekin was third on the team with a 93, and Matt Wiese followed closely behind with a 94 for the final counting score.
Cade Rosenberger shot a 117.
G-R’s golf campaign done
WINTHROP — Gladbrook-Reinbeck’s boys’ golf team shot a team score of 405 Friday at Buffalo Creek Golf Club, ending the Rebels’ season and missing out on qualification for districts.
The Rebels had a best score of 98 from Kadyn Schick. Isaac Baer followed with a 101, Trey Eggers shot 102 and Logan Giesking shot 104. Medalist at the event was Trey Johnson of hosts East Buchanan with a 77.
