SPORTS SHORTS: Mustang baseball sweeps Vikings; Trojan softball no-hit by Saydel

GILMAN — The East Marshall baseball team rebounded from a season-opening loss to sweep a doubleheader with Vinton-Shellsburg on Wednesday night.

The Mustangs (2-1) took the first game 9-8 before ending the second game early, winning 13-3 in five innings.

Logan Bowie led East Marshall in the opener, pitching five innings for the win and collecting three hits offensively. Bowie struck out four and walked one, allowing six runs (three earned) on seven hits. He also went 3-for-4 with an RBI, driving in Dane Thompson as the eventual game-winning run with a groundout in the bottom of the fifth.

Wesley Hamor went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs, while Eli Curtis and Tyler Fuller both had a double among their two hits to go with an RBI. Connor Hassin was 1-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.

Connor Kriegal pitched four innings for the win in game two, allowing one unearned run on two walks with two strikeouts. Thompson went 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and three runs scored, while Curtis was 3-for-4 with a double, two runs and five RBIs. He had a bases-clearing double and a two-run single. Jordan Swift had three singles and four RBIs, and Carter Anderson was 2-for-3 with three runs scored.

The Mustangs are scheduled to play at PCM tonight.

Trojans no-hit by Saydel

STATE CENTER — Saydel’s Dakota Lake struck out 15 in a no-hitter as the Eagles welcomed West Marshall back into the Heart of Iowa Conference with a 7-0 defeat on Wednesday night.

Lake walked one batter and another reached on an error, while Saydel’s offense capitalized on eight West Marshall errors. Lake also went 2-for-4 with three runs scored to lead the Eagles offensively.

Lilly Fisher got on base via error and Clara Dee reached on a walk for the Trojans (0-3). Madeline Karsjen pitched all seven innings in the loss, allowing three earned runs on nine hits and one walk, striking out two.

West Marshall is slated to play at AGWSR tonight.

LATE TUESDAY

Newton 6, Marshalltown 5

NEWTON — The Marshalltown baseball team broke a 2-all tie with three runs in the top of the seventh inning only to see host Newton rally for four runs in the home half for a 6-5 victory on Tuesday night.

Only three of Newton’s six runs came earned to Bobcat pitching as Marshalltown’s defense committed five errors. MHS outhit the Cardinals 9-6 but couldn’t come out on top in falling to 0-3.

Nick Rebik, Tyne Weeden and Patrick Landeros each had two hits, including a double for Rebik. Brendan Bates drove in two runs and Jacob VanPelt plated another.

The Bobcats are back in action with their home opener on Monday against Cedar Rapids Kennedy in their annual Memorial Day game. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
