SPORTS SHORTS: South Tama tops West Marshall in Trojan showdown

TAMA — The South Tama baseball team pieced together three-straight run-scoring hits to break a 1-all tie and eventually defeat West Marshall, 4-1, on Friday night.

Mickey Wanatee hit an RBI double, Jordan Bly followed with a run-scoring single and Jacob Collison added another as the Trojans improved to 2-0.

West Marshall’s lone run tied the score in the top of the third inning as Kinnick Christensen doubled home Cody Braddy, but South Tama regained the lead for good with three two-out runs in the home half.

Matt Wiese pitched four innings for the win, and Wanatee took care of the visiting Trojans over the final three frames.

Will Dawley got the loss for West Marshall (3-2), allowing three earned runs on five hits and two walks over three innings. He struck out three. Vincent Clawson allowed one hit over the final three innings, walking two and striking out seven.

Mustangs fall in road trip to Grinnell

GRINNELL — A five-run eruption in the first inning led Grinnell to a 9-3 victory over the East Marshall baseball team on Friday night.

The visiting Mustangs (2-2) managed just three hits against Grinnell (4-0). Dane Thompson had an RBI single and scored a run, Wesley Hamor had a single in four at-bats, and Eli Curtis drove in two runs with his hit. Tyler Fuller took the loss for the Mustang pitching staff, allowing six earned runs on three hits and five walks in one inning. Carter Anderson pitched four strong innings of relief, giving up one run on two hits and two walks, striking out three.

East Marshall outscored by Denver

LE GRAND — The East Marshall softball team scored 10 runs in its season debut, but the Mustangs came up short against Denver in a 12-10 slugfest here Friday night.

After East Marshall rallied back from an early deficit with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, the visiting Cyclones (4-0) answered with two runs in the top of the sixth to go back ahead for stay. The preseason Class 2A Mustangs sent 10 batters to the plate in the fifth, scoring twice on wild pitches, a Denver error and a bases-loaded hit batsmen.

The Cyclones got their go-ahead runs in the sixth on wild pitches as well.

Mustang relief pitcher Morgan Neuroth gave up three runs in 4 1/3 innings to take the loss, allowing four hits and three walks while striking out eight. Starter Emma Pfantz surrendered nine runs, though only three earned, on seven hits and two walks in 2 2/3 frames. She struck out three.

Callyn Curphy went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Rayne McIlrath was 2-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored to lead the East Marshall offense. Catelyn Fisher had a two-run double in the Mustangs’ four-run first.
