Mustangs mow down G-R

East Marshall routs Rebels in 6 innings

GLADBROOK — East Marshall and Gladbrook-Reinbeck are two young teams in different stages of development at this point in the season.

The differences were on display in the Mustangs’ 12-0 win over Gladbrook-Reinbeck Monday night, pushing the Mustangs to 6-7 on the season and dropping G-R to 0-6 on the season.

East Marshall’s starter on the mound was Emma Pfantz, who has taken over the role as one of two lead pitchers for the Mustangs after the losses of Kodie Hoskey and Reagan McIlrath to graduation. The junior threw six innings of two-hit softball and shut out the Rebels, not allowing a single walk and striking out six batters.

Coach Jary Hoskey said Pfantz and freshman Morgan Neuroth are growing into their roles — which is just what East Marshall needs to get back above .500.

“If we play some good defense and have some good pitching and keep hitting like we have been, we’ll be alright,” Hoskey said. “After 13 games, there’s no youth anymore.”

G-R starter Xandra Anderson was pitching well at the start of the contest, giving up only two hits and two runs in three innings of work. She was pulled after three innings for sophomore Breehan Dubberke.

Dubberke had a difficult three innings, giving up 11 hits and 10 runs.

Rebels coach Andrea Hesse said that the Rebels’ current difficulties with numbers hasn’t allowed them to play full junior varsity games. This has made games an important time for G-R to get pitchers game experience and not get overworked in busy weeks.

“It’s hard when you have three or more games a week and you don’t get that time to practice your pitching in practices,” Hesse said. “Just making some changes, seeing if different speeds affect the way [East Marshall] bats. Just the things we’re working on with our pitchers, getting them some time.”

East Marshall scored five runs in the fourth inning, had two in the fifth and added three more in the sixth to close out the contest. Leading the way at the plate for the Mustangs was Catelyn Fisher. The junior went 3-for-3 at the plate, driving in three runs and scoring two of her own. She also stole two bases. Ellie Hull stole three bases, scored twice and picked up two hits. Jayleigh Pansegrau had two hits as well. Rayne McIlrath scored two runs and drove in two runs with her only hit of the day. Callyn Curphy also drove in two runs with her only hit of the night. Hailee Fredregill had two hits and one RBI. Pfantz stole one base and scored once.
