SPORTS SHORTS: Trojans lose lead against Nevada

STATE CENTER — West Marshall softball held a 4-0 lead over Nevada through five innings, but a late surge from the Cubs resulted in a 10-4 loss for the Trojans (5-15).

The Cubs (8-13) were held in check for the first five innings of the game by starting pitcher Bella Borgos of West Marshall. Borgos went 5 2/3 innings and gave up nine hits, seven runs (three earned) and walked four. She struck out one.

In the second inning, Lilly Buck and Borgos scored on errors to give the Trojans a 2-0 lead. West Marshall added to its advantage with runs from Clara Dee and Josie Zahnd. Zahnd and Emma Stanley batted in the runs, and the Trojans were in control up 4-0. But after a scoreless fifth, Nevada scored seven runs in the sixth inning. Madeline Karsjen finished the last 1 1/3 innings of the game from the mound, giving up four hits and three runs (one earned).

Nevada had 13 hits to West Marshall’s seven — Zahnd, Buck and Borgos had two hits each while Stanley had one.

The Trojans play Thursday against Grundy Center at home.
