Hall, Goodson on Doak Walker watch list

Junior running backs Breece Hall of Iowa State and Tyler Goodson of the University of Iowa have been named preseason candidates for the 2021 Doak Walker Award, which is presented annually to the top running back in college football.

Hall finished sixth in the Heisman Trophy balloting and was one of three finalists for the Doak Walker Award in 2020. The Big 12 Conference’s Offensive Player of the Year, Hall led the nation in rushing yards (1,572), 100-yard rushing games (9) and consecutive games with a rushing touchdown (12) in 2020.

He also set or matched five Iowa State season records: touchdowns (23), rushing touchdowns (21), scoring (138), multi-TD rush games (8) and consecutive games with a rushing touchdown (12).

Hall busted out 20-yard runs 14 times last year and has just one lost fumble in 511 career touches. He also caught 23 passes for 180 yards.

Goodson earned first-team all-Big Ten honors from coaches and media in 2020 after leading Iowa’s rushing attack with 143 carries for 762 yards and seven touchdowns. In 2019, Goodson became the first freshman ever to lead Iowa in rushing. He rushed 134 times for 638 yards and five touchdowns, while recording 24 receptions for 166 yards in his first college season

Goodson is a preseason first-team all-Big Ten selection and preseason fourth-team All-America selection by Athlon Sports. He was also named to the Maxwell Award Watchlist.

Former Hawkeye Shonn Greene won the Doak Walker Award in 2008, while Albert Young was a semifinalist in 2005.
