MHS swimmers take learning moments from Ankeny dual

T-R PHOTO BY NOAH ROHLFING - Marshalltown’s Taylor Jones competes in the 200-yard individual medley during Tuesday’s swimming meet against Ankeny at the Marshalltown YMCA/YWCA. Jones placed third in the event with a time of 2 minutes, 39.51 seconds.

Marshalltown girls’ swimming and diving rolled into Tuesday night’s meet with No. 7 Ankeny on a high after a fourth-place finish in the Bobcat Invite and season bests aplenty.

The dual with the Hawks was a bit of a check on the Bobcats’ progress, as Ankeny dismantled Marshalltown 147-38 in the varsity meet.

The Bobcats failed to win a single event, with the best finish coming in diving — where Abby Tollefson took second place at 296.15 points, only finishing behind Ankeny’s Erica Peters. Kaisa Stanley finished fourth (203.95) and Kiersten Randall was fifth (185.9).

Head coach Angie Nelson said the meet was sort of “meh” for the Bobcats.

“We were just a little off,” Nelson said. “Even our fastest things were a second to a second-and-a-half high, and so I was a little disappointed in that. I don’t think it was any one thing.”

Marshalltown picked up a third-place finish in the opening meet of the night, with the group of Averie Wittkop, Taylor Jones, Lesli Waltermire and Maeve Janssen swimming a 2 minutes, 3.93 seconds in the 200-yard medley relay.

Some of the Bobcat regulars did not swim in the same events they usually do, Nelson said, because she doesn’t want them to only get used to swimming in one or two strokes.

Jones finished third in the varsity 200 IM, swimming the race in 2:39.51.

Waltermire was fourth in the 50 freestyle (26.32), and in the butterfly Jones led the way for MHS with a fourth place finish (1:17.53). Wittkop was fourth in the 100 freestyle at 1:01.45, running ahead of Kate Jones in fifth (1:05.95). Waltermire swam in the 500 freestyle and ended up fourth in 5:58.89, while the Bobcats’ A squad in the 200 free relay was another fourth-place finisher at 1:59.06 with Janssen, Kate Jones, Hannah Case and Amaiha Weatherly.

Wittkop finished in third place with a time of 1:06.58 in the 100 backstroke, a slightly higher time than her second-place result on Saturday. Nelson said a combination of short rest after Saturday’s big meet and the ability of the Hawks contributed to a couple of slightly higher times in a few events. She added that it’s important for the Bobcats to keep going through what she admitted will be a rough couple of weeks in action.

“We’re gonna have a lot of teams that are this good that we [face],” Nelson said. “Where it’s hard to even catch a third-place finish. We can’t just give up, because we don’t have that many more opportunities left before we have to start focusing on championship season. We’ve got some girls who will be swimming in championship season, so we really can’t lose sight of that.”

Case was fourth in the breaststroke (1:31.82) and the group of Waltermire, Taylor Jones, Wittkop and Kate Jones took fourth in the 400 free relay.

Up next for the Bobcats is a Thursday evening dual at Indianola.
