AMES — The Marshalltown boys’ golf team brought home two individual flags and a fourth-place finish from the Turk Bowman Invite on Monday at Veenker Memorial Golf Course.

The Bobcats were led by top-10 finishes from seniors Grant Greazel and Colin Schmit, who placed sixth and eighth, respectively, with team-leading rounds of 75 and 77.

It was an all-senior scoring night for Marshalltown, as Drake Polley posted an 81 and Kevin Strand stepped into the varsity lineup for the first time and recorded a counting round of 82.

“Kevin Strand in particular played well in his first start of the season in the varsity lineup,” said MHS head coach Lucas Johnson. “We’ve been looking for that score from the back end of the lineup that could contribute if one of our top four have an off day. It was great to see him come through with a consistent round in the low 80s that could be a counter.”

Marshalltown’s 315 team total trailed only Waukee (301), Southeast Polk (306) and Ankeny Centennial (308). The Bobcats were just ahead of Johnston (317) and Indianola (321) to hold firm to the fourth position.

“I thought we battled well on a tough golf course,” Johnson said. “Veenker has some fine margins for error, but for the most part we were able to keep the ball in play and avoid big numbers.”

Greazel made his way through to a 3-over-par 75 helped by three birdies.

Ryan Schmit (85) and Jacob Thiessen (87) also competed for the Bobcats, who return home for the Joe August Invite on Friday. Marshalltown hosts 12 schools for the annual event to be played this year at the American Legion Memorial Golf Course.
