Bobcats marooned by No. 4 Dowling

WEST DES MOINES — The Marshalltown girls’ swimming squad suffered a 151-31 defeat to Dowling Catholic in Tuesday night’s CIML dual meet.

The host Maroons, listed fourth in the state’s power rankings, won nine of the 12 events and swept the top-three positions in five of those wins. Marshalltown, ranked 30th, got three event victories in the pool.

Lesli Waltermire captured two of the Bobcats’ three golds, getting to the wall first in both the 50- and 100-yard freestyle swims. Waltermire, a sophomore, won the 50 in 26.32 seconds and the 100 in 58.63 seconds.

Averie Wittkop, also a sophomore, touched up first in the 100 backstroke as well, winning with a time of 1:04.92.

Marshalltown only had a pair of runner-up finishes for the match. Sophomore diver Abby Tollefson took second with her score of 264.60, narrowly getting edged out by Dowling’s Berit Kallemeier (268.55). Kaisa Stanley came in third with a 216.90 total.

The Bobcats’ 200-yard freestyle relay foursome of Maeve Janssen, Riley Robinson, Hannah Case and Kate Jones scored silver in a combined time of 1:57.16, while Janssen got bronze on her own with a third-place finish in the 50 freestyle (27.21).

Marshalltown’s next meet is a week away with a road dual on Oct. 12 at Fort Dodge.
