North Tama cruises into 1A regional semifinals

TRAER — The Class 1A No. 12 North Tama volleyball team needed less than one hour to dispatch Belle Plaine from the Class 1A Region 6 bracket, beating the Plainsmen 25-11, 25-16, 25-10 in Wednesday’s quarterfinals.

Shae Ewoldt posted a team-leading 15 kills for the Redhawks, who beat Belle Plaine once during the regular season as well. North Tama senior Jadyn Rausch added eight kills to go with her 28 assists. Briar Blake finished with five kills and Lainey Willenbring chipped in five assists for the offense.

Breanna Sebetka posted three total blocks to lead North Tama, Aubree Monat had two, and both Ewoldt and Blake added another. Kaitlyn Calderwood’s 16 digs were a team high.

The Redhawks racked up 12 service aces, led by Monat and Willenbring with three apiece.

The Redhawks (28-10) will host Montezuma (22-9) in Monday’s regional semifinals at 7 p.m. in Traer.

Comets fall in four sets

CONRAD — Grand View Christian won the big points and picked off host BCLUW in four sets in Wednesday’s Class 1A Region 3 quarterfinal, clipping the Comets 25-23, 25-21, 22-25, 25-22.

The Thunder (23-21) advance to face No. 11 Gladbrook-Reinbeck (27-13), which swept aside GMG in straight sets as well, 25-14, 25-12, 25-17, in Reinbeck. The Rebels entertain GVC on Monday night at 7 p.m.

BCLUW (21-17) was led by Eden Wilson’s whopping 30 kills on 63 swings. Allison Engle had 16 kills to go with 22 assists, and Sydney Andereson finished with 24 assists.

Katie Hill came away with a Comet-best three blocks in the match, while Anderson and Emma Averill racked up 20 digs apiece. BCLUW served 87-for-92 as a team, with Wilson collecting its only two aces.

West Marshall bows out

MOUNT VERNON — The West Marshall volleyball squad bowed out in the Class 3A Region 5 semifinals against fifth-ranked Mount Vernon, falling in straight sets 25-17, 25-14, 25-13.

The host Mustangs (33-12) advance to take on No. 11 Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont (31-4) in Tuesday’s regional final at Williamsburg.

West Marshall’s season ends at 18-17. The Trojans were led in their finale by Katy Reyerson, who had seven kills, 11 digs, four blocks and the team’s lone service ace. Halie Hohnstein also had seven kills, and Kylie Karsjen contributed three kills in the loss.

Reilly Jensen finished with 16 assists. Keatan Pfantz contributed nine digs.

Mount Vernon setter Madeleine Miller had 38 assists as well as four kills. Chloe Meester led the Mustangs with 15 kills, and both Brooke Ellyson and Emma Meester added nine kills.
