GRINNELL -- The Marshalltown boys' swim team won eight of 11 events and captured both legs of a double dual on Monday night at Grinnell College, beating Newton and host Grinnell to close out the pre-holiday schedule.
The Bobcats defeated Newton 61-28 and held off Grinnell 48-44, though Marshalltown swam the last two events as exhibitions to keep the final scores closer. MHS swept the top two spots in two events -- the 200- and 500-yard freestyle -- and closed the first portion of its schedule with a 4-2 dual record.
"We had 32 season-best times so that's always a good sign that we're swimming faster," said MHS head coach Mike Loupee. "We moved some guys around quite a bit."
The Bobcats' newly-assembled 200 medley relay team of Aaron Seberger, Marcus Barker, Stephen Blom and Lincoln Barker emerged victorious in the opening race, clocking in at 1 minute, 48.61 seconds. The usual combination of Dane Petty, Sam Greazel, Charlie Gilbertson and Carter Hunt came away with third place in 1:51.14.
Petty picked up a win in the very next event -- the 200 freestyle -- in 1:57.72, while Lincoln Barker was the runner-up in 2:02.01.
Marcus Barker captured the 200 individual medley (2:08.22) with Greazel in third (2:26.66), and Seberger won the ensuing 50 freestyle (23.08).
Gilbertson was first to the wall in the 100 butterfly (57.08), while it was Marcus Barker winning the 100 freestyle (51.74). Blom got an individual win with his time of 5:15.58 in the 500 freestyle, and Petty placed second (5:20.37) in his first try at the event this season.
Seberger scored Marshalltown's final win of the meet, claiming the 100 backstroke in 59.52 seconds.
"I'm content, we've got some good times posted and we've swam against some really good competition," said Loupee. "I'm content where we're at, but we certainly have a lot of work to do if we want to be swimming at the end of the year in Iowa City.
"They have swam more intensity yards than we have going into the break in years past, so we hope that intensity pays dividends when we get to taper."
