Defense begets offense, and Marshalltown boys’ basketball coach Michael Appel seems to have gotten that point across to his squad.

The Bobcats allowed a season-low output for the second consecutive game to go into the holiday break on a roll, beating Southeast Polk 55-28 on Tuesday night inside the Roundhouse.

Marshalltown (5-3) held the visiting Rams scoreless for huge stretches at the start of the first three quarters en route to an insurmountable advantage and a momentous win heading into the new year. Armonniey Thomas scored a game-high 22 points, Dalen Huston added a career-high 16 and the Bobcats used a stingy defense to catalyze an efficient offense in a convincing wire-to-wire win.

“We were able to get out and run a lot just because of the number of stops we were able to get on defense, so a lot of our points came out of our fast break,” said MHS head coach Michael Appel. “Our guys just understood what we were trying to do, taking good shots and being unselfish.”

The Bobcats held Southeast Polk’s leading scorer Riley Edwards to 15 points below his season average, limiting the Rams’ junior guard to a team-high eight points. All of Edwards’ scoring was done in the first half, including Southeast Polk’s first basket at the 2-minute, 55-second mark of the opening stanza.

Marshalltown led 10-0 before the Rams finally cracked the scorebard.

“[Edwards] is their guy, he’s going to take a majority of their shots and they run a lot of stuff for him and we have to understand when he has the ball he’s going to try and score,” said Appel. “It starts with the guy guarding him in Drake (Kapayou) and he just did a great job of harassing him and making sure he contested his shots while also having the other guys in the right spots to help if we need to.”

Southeast Polk didn’t score for the first 6:18 of the second quarter nor the first 3:33 of the third and trailed 41-13 before a Jacob Eastman layup ended the Rams’ lengthy drought.

The Bobcats scored the first 13 points of the second half, nine of them by Huston. The sophomore forward had a pair of steals that turned into fast-break dunks, and he added a three-point play and later his first 3-pointer of the season as Marshalltown’s lead achieved blowout status.

Kapayou also made a pair of 3-pointers for six points, while Brayden Weatherly pitched in a complete game of three points, a team-leading eight rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots.

“He filled the stat sheet,” Appel said of Weatherly, a junior forward. “He’s just all over the place with his energy and effort. He drew two charges, and he’s doing that making those hustle plays. It’s just a spark off the bench that’s huge for us because it ignites us and obviously it allows us to get in transition and get going.”

Thomas finished with four rebounds and four steals, while Huston had four boards, two steals and two blocked shots.

“Just really proud of how our guys finished the break,” Appel said. “This is a great way to go into break. There’s a lot of things we need to continue to get better at, but just the overall attitudes in that locker room are great and the guys are in a great spot, they’re buying into what we’re trying to do and their roles. We’re just really excited for the second half of the season.”

The Bobcats return from the holiday break with a four-game road stand that starts with a trip to Class 4A No. 1 Ames.
