Mohawks mow down MHS girls in 25th straight

MASON CITY — The Marshalltown girls’ basketball team committed 28 turnovers in its 25th straight loss to Mason City, falling 57-16 to the Mohawks in Thursday’s CIML Iowa Conference contest at North Iowa Area Community College.

The Bobcats went without a pair of primary ballhandlers and couldn’t overcome Mason City’s full-court pressure, succumbing in a scoreless opening quarter. The host Mohawks (7-7, 4-4) held Marshalltown (1-12, 1-5) without a point for the first 15 minutes of the first half, taking a 35-4 lead into the intermission.

Malena Kammerer’s 3-pointer was the Bobcats’ only points of the third quarter before the Mohawks called off the heat in the final stanza.

“A rough game from the tip,” said MHS head coach Brian Murphy. “We were down two of our usual guards and struggled mightily to break their full-court press as a result. Even when we were able to break it, we were rarely composed in the first half on the offensive end.

“Our half-court defense at least kept it from spiraling out of control, but over half of their points in the first half came off turnovers or transition buckets.”

Zaria Falls led Mason City with 16 points and Reggi Spotts added 11, as both players made a pair of 3-pointers. Jada Williams added eight points for the Mohawks.

Paige Werzberger scored a team-leading seven points for Marshalltown. Kammerer cashed in the team’s only 3-pointer, while Sara Huffman, Laney Danielson and Lily Roberts added two points apiece.

Sophie Younkin had a team-leading six rebounds and Wertzberger had five boards. Huffman finished with three steals and two assists.

“Overall, Paige had a solid game as she continues to work her way back into rhythm,” said Murphy. “She was very aggressive on the boards and muscled her way to the rim in the second half.

“Laney Danielson did a solid job of again filling in in a tough spot and scored her first varsity points.”

The Bobcats close out a four-game road swing with Saturday’s 3:15 p.m. game at Class 5A No. 4 Ankeny Centennial.
