Reyerson reaches 1st team, Engle 3rd

West Marshall junior earns promotion in Class 3A; Comet debuts in final season

T-R FILE PHOTO - West Marshall junior forward Katy Reyerson (44) is fouled by Roland-Story’s Kamryn Lande (23) on her wawy to the basket during the first half of their Class 3A Region 5 final on Feb. 19 at Ankeny Centennial High School in Ankeny.

DES MOINES — The ascent continues for West Marshall’s Katy Reyerson.

The junior guard/forward was named to the Iowa Print Sports Writers Association’s Class 3A all-state first team, a promotion that paralleled West Marshall’s continued climb with Reyerson at the front of the charge.

Reyerson, a 6-foot-2 junior left-hander who can handle the basketball and post up in the paint, was named to the IPSWA’s eight-player first team a year after debuting on the second team. She earned her spot on the all-state squad after finishing in the top-13 in all five major statistical categories in 3A.

Reyerson ranked third in 3A scoring average (19.8 points per game), first in rebounding (11.7), seventh in blocked shots (2.4), and 13th in assists (4.3) and steals (3.5) in helping the Trojans go 22-3 in a season that came to an end in the regional finals.

She’s the first West Marshall player to earn multiple all-state honors since Isabelle Gradwell was a third-teamer in 2017 and a first-team pick in 2018. And she’s got one more season to go.

Reyerson finished ranked 24th in the state in all classes with her 19.8 point-per-game average and 17th in rebounding.

West Marshall ended the season ranked eighth by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union, falling to No. 9 Roland-Story in the regional finals.

BCLUW senior Allison Engle was honored with third-team all-state selection by the IPSWA, finishing her farewell season scoring 15 points per game. The 5-10 point guard also averaged 7.0 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 3.0 steals per game to lead the Cometes to a 14-9 campaign that came to an end in the second round of the regional tournament.

Engle eclipsed the 1,000-point plateau during her senior season, finishing with 1,094 points in a career that was highlighted by last winter’s venture into the regional finals before bowing out to eventual 1A state runner-up Bishop Garrigan.

Both Reyerson and Engle were named to the Iowa Girls Coaches Association’s all-district teams for their respective regions — Reyerson in the 3A Northeast district and Engle in the 1A North Central District.

Also making the 10-player 1A North Central district squad was Meskwaki Settlement senior Wakinyela Bear. Bear was the standout performer on a Warrior squad that finished 18-5 overall and 9-3 as runners-up in the Iowa Star Conference’s South Division.

Bear finished 15th in the 1A scoring ranks, averaging 17.9 points per game. She led Meskwaki with 3.7 assists and 3.9 steals per game, and finished second on the team with 5.8 rebounds per game.

The IPSWA voted Hannah Stuelke of Cedar Rapids Washington as Miss Iowa Basketball 2022. The 6-2 senior forward is a University of Iowa commit who averaged 29.1 points and 10.3 rebounds per game for the Warriors, who finished 16.7 this season.
