SPORTS SHORTS: West Marshall boys outduel Colo-NESCO on the links

STATE CENTER — There was a three-way tie for the low round, but no doubt about who won the dual meet.
The West Marshall boys’ golf team toppled Colo-NESCO 174-209 on Monday, posting six of the seven low scores to win a non-conference dual meet at Lincoln Valley Golf Course.
Colo-NESCO’s Austin Hennick won a cardback for medalist honors over West Marshall’s Will Dawley and Luke Vawter after each of the three shot a 40. Dawley took runner-up honors on the cardback as well.
Joey Tollefson shot a 46 and Nick Froscheiser finished with a 48 to round out the Trojans’ scoring.
BCLUW boys challenge reigning 1A champs
CONRAD — The BCLUW boys’ golf team gave AGWSR a challenge but couldn’t knock off the defending Class 1A state champions, falling 163-171 in Monday’s NICL West Division dual meet at Oakwood Golf Course.
BCLUW was led by a runner-up medalist round from Ray Callaway, who shot a 3-over-par 38. Mason Martin (42), Bodie Butler (43) and Walker Ashton (48) completed the Comets’ team scoring.
AGWSR’s Daniel Stahl shot a 2-over 37 for medalist honors.
Mustangs edge G-R on Rebels’ home course
REINBECK — The East Marshall boys’ golf team edged out host Gladbrook-Reinbeck by two strokes to take an NICL West Division dual meet from the Rebels on Monday, winning 214-216 at Oak Leaf Country Club.
Seth Freese shot a medalist round of 46 to lead East Marshall. The Mustangs also got counting scores from Colton Robinson (53), Toby Ryan (57) and Carter Anderson (58).
Kadyn Schick and Isaac Baer both shot 49 to lead the Rebels, with Schick earning runner-up medalist honors. Austin Gehring (58) and Cole Fleshner (60) also had counting scores for G-R.
East Marshall’s girls shot a collective 251 team score, while G-R fielded only two players. The Mustangs were led by medalist Camy Weeks and runner-up Marissa Duffy after both players shot 59. Tori Cox (65) and Addison Dobson (68) also contributed for East Marshall.
Both Nattalee Brinkman and Delaney Slifer-Drew shot 82 for G-R.
Comets 4th, East Marshall 7th in Mustang Relays
LE GRAND — BCLUW finished fourth and the host East Marshall boys’ track and field team took seventh out of 13 participating teams at the Mustang Relays held Monday night.
BCLUW racked up 79 points and trailed only Denver (150), Benton Community (110) and Aplington-Parkersburg (104) in the final team standings. The Comets got a first-place finish from its 4×800-meter relay team, as Henry Kaisand, Nick Pieper, Lane Hartwig and Cayden White clocked in with a combined time of 8 minutes, 47.96 seconds.
The Comets had a trio of second-place finishes as Tyler Bracy was runner-up in the long jump (18 feet, 9 1/4 inches), Connor Lynch scored silver in the 400 hurdles (59.65), and Cayden McLeland was second the 1,600 in 10:48.82.
Cayden White came away with third place in the 1,600 (5:06.26), and Logan Aicher trailed A-P’s Jayden Mackie (19 feet) and teammate Bracy. BCLUW’s 4×200 relay team of Benny Runge, Logan Aicher, Liam Speicher and Bracy combined on a time of 1:37.64.
East Marshall’s peak performance came from Joe Terrones, who took the top spot in the 1,600 in a time of 4:54.91. Kordell Negrete was second in the 800 (2:10.40), and the duo combined with Hunter Hughlette and Austin Burke for the runner-up combination in the 4×800 (8:50.84).
The Mustangs’ distance medley quartet of Landon Elliott, Ethan Hassin, Negrette and Terrones also took the bronze in 3:54.06.
