MHS baseball claims nightcap at Hoover

DES MOINES — The Marshalltown High School baseball season got off to a rough start but rebounded immediately, splitting a CIML doubleheader at Des Moines Hoover on Monday night.

Hoover senior Teran Bates tossed a four-hitter in the first game, an 11-1, five-inning victory for the host Huskies. The Bobcats countered with junior pitcher Kaden Ricken’s complete-game performance in the nightcap, a 5-4 triumph.

Ricken allowed three earned runs on eight hits and three walks over seven innings, striking out four. He also had one of Marshalltown’s nine hits in the second game, contributing one of the team’s three doubles.

Nick Rebik went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored, Sam Greazel went 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Caleb Kusserow was 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Seth Smith and Alex Thompson both had a hit.

The Bobcats jumped out to a 4-0 lead with two runs in both the first and second innings, and another run in the sixth made it a 5-2 lead for MHS. Hoover rallied with single runs in the sixth and seventh frames but couldn’t get back to even.

The sum total was the first Bobcat victory for new head coach Todd Oberthien.

Bates gave Hoover a leg up in the opener, allowing four hits and no walks while striking out eight. Nathan Morrissey was 3-for-4 at the plate with a double, two runs and two RBIs to lead the Huskes.

Smith surrendered 10 runs — six earned — on 11 hits and three walks while striking out one. Smith also had two of the Bobcats’ four hits off Bates, including a double, while driving in Rebik as the team’s only run. Thompson singled as well.

Marshalltown committed six of its 10 errors on the night in the first game.

The Bobcats are back out on the road Tuesday with a twinbill at Des Moines Roosevelt scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. start.
