SPORTS SHORTS: Curphy continues to crush, Mustangs win again

LE GRAND — Callyn Curphy homered for the fifth time in as many games and the Class 2A No. 12 East Marshall softball team slammed Jesup 12-0 in Tuesday’s cross-NICL clash.

Curphy’s three-run home run was a part of an 11-run third inning in which 17 players batted and the Mustangs (17-5) rapped out seven hits. Morgan Neuroth had a three-run double in the inning, and Jesup pitchers issued five walks.

An RBI single for Ellie Hull in the bottom of the fourth ended the game early.

Amanda Treptow’s bunt single in the top of the fourth was the only hit for the J-Hawks (12-11). Neuroth struck out four and walked none for the win.

Neuroth and Camy Weeks had two hits to lead the Mustang offense. Kennedy Wheater doubled and scored.

Winners of six straight, East Marshall travels to face Aplington-Parkersburg on Wednesday night.

Wild pitch plates game-winner for West Marshall

STATE CENTER — Courtesy runner Madeline Karsjen scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, helping the West Marshall softball team top Roland-Story 2-1 in Tuesday’s Heart of Iowa Conference tilt.

Ciera Randall reached on a one-out error in the seventh with the Trojans (10-11, 4-5) locked in a 1-all tie with Roland-Story (12-7, 6-3). Lilly Fischer singled, and a pair of wild pitches eventually plated Karsjens as the game-winner.

Lilly Buck tripled and scored on a Kalyn Polley groundout to give West Marshall a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth, but a pair of Trojan errors helped the Norsemen knot things up in the top of the seventh.

Bella Borgos pitched all seven innings for the win, allowing one unearned run on seven hits and one walk. She struck out two. Josie Zahnd, Fischer and Buck had West Marshall’s only three hits.

Madison Geise struck out six and walked one in the loss for R-S. Lydia Oetker was 3-for-3 and scored a run to lead the Norse. Macy Friest and Geise had two hits apiece.

West Marshall hosts Greene County on Wednesday night.

Mustangs can’t keep pace with J-Hawks

GILMAN — The East Marshall baseball team got three of its five hits in the first inning, but the Mustangs couldn’t keep up with Jesup in a 12-2, five-inning loss on Tuesday night.

The J-Hawks (12-5) scored five times in the top of the first to take the lead for good. Blain Augspurger look the loss for East Marshall, allowing 12 runs (11 earned) on 11 hits and three walks over four innings pitched. He struck out five.

Blake Neuroth was 2-for-3 with an RBI double and a run scored, and Augspurger was 2-for-3 as well. Connor Hassin had a hit in his only official at-bat.

East Marshall travels to face Aplington-Parkersburg on Wednesday night.

Little Cyclones hit walk-off homer to beat Bobcats

AMES — Griff Linder led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a solo home run as Ames beat the Marshalltown baseball team 7-6 in walk-off fashion to open Monday’s CIML Iowa Conference doubleheader.

The host Little Cyclones (15-2, 9-5) carried the momentum into the nightcap, toppling Marshalltown 12-1 in five innings.

Linder had three of Ames’ 13 hits in the first game, including a double and the walk-off dinger. The Little Cyclones had six extra-base hits in all.

Relief pitcher Zander Stupp took the loss for MHS (3-23, 0-16). Nick Rebik and Seth Smith both had two of Marshalltown’s seven hits. Stupp doubled and scored twice, and Alex Thompson had a two-run triple.

James Martin scattered six hits in a complete-game pitching effort for Ames in the nightcap. He struck out two and hit a batter. Evan Grey was 3-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and three runs scored for the Little Cyclones.

Rebik was 2-for-3 and Seth Smith hit an RBI double, driving in Tayven Dutton as the Bobcats’ only run.

Marshalltown hosts Mason City for a CIML Iowa doubleheader on Wednesday night.

No. 12 Ames finishes off season sweep of MHS softball

AMES — The Marshalltown softball team suffered its 10th consecutive defeat, falling twice to Class 5A No. 12 Ames in Monday’s CIML Iowa Conference twinbill.

The Little Cyclones (14-11, 7-7) completed the 4-0 season sweep of MHS, beating the Bobcats (1-18, 0-16) by a combined score of 45-0.

Marshalltown had six baserunners in the doubleheader, but half of them were cut down trying to advance.

Gianna Baune led off the opener with an infield single but was caught stealing. She would be the only Bobcat to reach base against Alexa Kopaska, who struck out three and walked none in a 13-0, three-inning victory.

Ellie Lynch and Olivia Smalley had two hits apiece to lead Ames, which scored 13 earned runs in two at-bats against Ava Augustine. The Little Cyclones had nine hits and received six walks. Augustine struck out one.

In the nightcap, Syndey Smalley pitched a two-hitter for Ames, which won 7-0. Smalley struck out three, walked two and hit a batter.

Ireland Buss went 2-for-3 with an RBI single, a triple and two runs scored to lead the Little Cyclones. Kaylee Mescher singled and drove in three.

Claire Bohan and Augustine had the Bobcats’ two singles. Avery Mull surrendered just four hits but walked two and hit three batters. She struck out five in the loss.

Marshalltown hosts Mason City for a CIML Iowa doubleheader Wednesday starting at 5 p.m.

Siegert helps Trojans tie up Nevada in league play

NEVADA — Owen Siegert tossed a two-hit shutout and the Class 2A No. 7 West Marshall baseball team beat up on Nevada 15-0 in five innings here Monday night.

The Trojans (19-6, 9-1) totaled just seven hits but tallied 14 runs thanks to 11 walks and nine hit batters issued by Nevada pitching. Kinnick Christensen added a three-run homer to help the cause as West Marshall breezed to the Heart of Iowa Conference triumph.

Parker Reese was 2-for-3 with an RBI and three runs scored, and Clay Cuva was 1-for-3 with an RBI double. Cuva also stole four bases. AJ Dee was hit by pitch three times and drove in two runs.

Siegert struck out eight, walked three and hit a batter. He needed only 78 pitches to go all five innings on the mound for West Marshall.

Gavin Melohn and Karter Beving each had a hit for Nevada (11-10, 4-6).
