Mustangs eliminated by Sailors
LA PORTE CITY — The Waterloo Columbus baseball team took down East Marshall 12-2 in five innings in Saturday’s opening round of Class 2A District 12 play.
The Sailors (19-10) had five extra-base hits and scored in four of their five at-bats, including one run in the bottom of the fifth to finish off the Mustangs (6-20).
Blain Augspurger took the loss on the mound for East Marshall, surrendering nine runs — though only four earned — on eight hits and one walk over 1 2/3 innings. Carter Anderson pitched the final 2 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on six hits, one walk and two strikeouts.
Landon Elliott had two of East Marshall’s seven hits. He and Blake Neuroth scored on Connor Hassin’s two-run double in the top of the third inning, but Waterloo Columbus led 9-2 by that point.
Tyler Fuller doubled, while Alex Jacobson, Neuroth and Anderson each added a single for the Mustangs in their season-ending defeat.
Myles Gardner struck out five and walked none, pitching all five innings for the Sailors. Carter Gallagher, Connor Knudtson and Caden Hartz had three hits apiece, driving in a combined eight runs.
Columbus meets Williamsburg (21-13) in the 5 p.m. game Tuesday in State Center, while No. 6 West Marshall (26-8) faces Union Community (9-22) at 7 p.m.
