SPORTS SHORTS: Bobcat baseball bounced by Maroons in substate opener
WEST DES MOINES — The Marshalltown High School baseball team saw its season end with its 27th consecutive defeat, falling 15-0 to No. 7 Dowling Catholic in Friday’s Class 4A Substate 3 opening-round contest.
The Bobcats finished the summer 3-35 overall. Top-seeded Dowling Catholic (25-14) gets a bye through to the substate final, awaiting the winner of Iowa City West and Saturday’s winner between Linn-Mar and Waterloo East.
Details of the Bobcats’ defeat were unavailable as of press time.
BCLUW softball stumped by ninth-ranked Clarksville
CLARKSVILLE — Sierra Vance pitched a four-hit shutout and ninth-ranked Clarksville defeated BCLUW 9-0 in Friday’s Class 1A Region 6 semifinal.
The host Indians (19-2) advance to face No. 3 Lisbon (34-4) in the regional finals Monday in Lisbon after the Lions downed Springville 7-6 in their semifinal match.
BCLUW (16-15) closes its season with 13 more wins than the summer previous, in which the Comets finished 3-31.
Katie Hill took the loss in the circle for the Comets, allowing five earned runs on 11 hits and one walk.
BCLUW’s four hits each arrived in a different inning. Callie Swanson, Cassie Nason, Cameron Bergman and Raegan Crawford each hit a single.
