SPORTS SHORTS: Hawks deny West Marshall’s bid for HOIAC co-champ

JEWELL — South Hamilton rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat Class 2A No. 6 West Marshall on Wednesday night, 9-8, denying the Trojans a share of the Heart of Iowa Conference baseball title.

West Marshall (25-8, 12-2) finished one game shy of Roland-Story (18-6, 13-1), which defeated PCM 6-1 to pick up the outright conference crown.

The Trojans scored three times in the sixth and again in the seventh to overcome a 5-2 deficit for an 8-7 lead going into South Hamilton’s last at-bat. The Hawks (6-16, 2-12) scrounged up two runs to spoil West Marshall’s title hopes.

Parker Reese was 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored to lead West Marshall. Clay Cuva, Caden Pfantz and Kinnick Christensen had two hits apiece. Cuva hit a double, a triple, scored twice and drove in a run. Christensen and Pfantz both had two RBIs.

Cuva pitched six innings, allowing six unearned runs on six hits, five walks and two hit batsmen. He struck out five. Tony McKinney was unable to nail down the save, allowing two runs on two hits and two walks in the bottom of the seventh. He struck out two.

Rebels dash past Denver in regular-season finale

REINBECK — The Gladbrook-Reinbeck baseball team jumped out to a 9-3 lead and held off Denver for a 10-7 victory in Wednesday’s regular-season finale.

The Rebels (19-13) were led by Nick Tscherter and Logan Giesking, as both finished 3-for-4 at the plate. Tscherter had a double, scored twice and drove in three runs, while Giesking scored a run and drove in two. Isaac Clark had a two-run triple and scored, while Austin Gehring was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. William Kiburis singled twice and scored three times.

Starting pitcher Drew Eilers earned the win, allowing six runs (three earned) on seven hits over four innings. He struck out one. Austen Mathern scattered four hits over three innings, allowing one run on one walk and one hit batsman while striking out one.

GMG secures seventh win by beating Baxter

GREEN MOUNTAIN — The GMG softball team secured its most wins since 2016 with Wednesday’s 12-2, six-inning victory over Baxter in Iowa Star Conference South Division play.

The Wolverines (7-12, 7-3) compiled 14 hits in the win, scoring at least once in each of their six at-bats. Dylan Mathern was 3-for-4 with a double and three runs scored, while Kennadi Sederburg was 3-for-4 with two doubles and a run. Abby Parks, Marriah Stonewall and Maecyn Lewis added two hits apiece. Lewis doubled, scored and drove in two runs.

Olivia Maddux, Adelyn Sienknecht, Jenna Yilek and Lily Harris each finished with one hit. Sienknecht allowed seven hits in the circle, surrendering no earned runs on seven hits and one walk for the win over Baxter (5-17, 4-5).

Trojans taken to task by South Hamilton

STATE CENTER — South Hamilton scored single runs in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings and limited West Marshall to just three hits in a 4-1 softball victory in Wednesday’s Heart of Iowa Conference clash.

Ciera Randall’s double in the seventh drove home courtesy runner Lily Zahnd with West Marshall’s only run.

Josie Zahnd had a single and Emma Stanley doubled for the Trojans (12-17, 5-9), who split the season series with South Hamilton (11-14, 5-9).

Bella Borgos took the loss for West Marshall, allowing two earned runs on 13 hits and three walks. She struck out four in the complete-game loss.
