MASON CITY — The Marshalltown girls’ swimming and diving team managed to win three events but couldn’t catch up to Mason City in Tuesday’s Iowa Alliance Conference dual meet, falling 71-29 to the Riverhawks.

Mason City won the other nine events and was in control from the outset, outscoring Marshalltown or at least breaking even with the Bobcats in every event.

MHS got a pair of individual wins from Averie Wittkop, who was first to the wall in the 200-yard individual medley as well as the 100 backstroke. Wittkop’s winning times were 2 minutes, 30.02 seconds in the medley, and 1:08.33 in the backstroke.

Lesli Waltermire claimed the 50 freestyle title for MHS, clocking in at 26.08 seconds. She also scored second place in the 100 freestyle (57.13).

Marshalltown’s team depth was diminished by Mason City’s four-lane pool, limiting the scoring in each event to only the top-three finishers. The Bobcats took second in both freestyle relays, and Kiersten Randall scored 181.59 to take second in the diving competition.

MHS returns home to take on Fort Dodge in another conference dual on Tuesday.
