SPORTS SHORTS: Comets close out .500 campaign in defeat

CONRAD — The BCLUW football team closed out its winningest season in nearly a decade with Friday’s 52-6 loss to 10th-ranked Wapsie Valley.

The Comets (4-4, 2-4) won at least four games for the first time since going 5-5 in 2013. Walker Ashton threw for 128 yards and ran for 26 yards and BCLUW’s lone touchdown. Connor Lynch caught six passes for 86 yards, and Cael Keller had six grabs for 40 yards. Tyler Bracy added 35 rushing yards but the Comets couldn’t overcome five turnovers.

Lane Hartwig led the BCLUW defense with 12 tackles.

Wapsie Valley (6-2, 5-1) got 161 yards rushing and one TD from Braden Knight.

No. 2 Spartans hand North Tama a decisive loss

TRAER — The Class A No. 2 Grundy Center football team held North Tama to 105 yards of total offense in a 42-0 victory over the host Redhawks on Friday night at Dennis Field.

Grundy Center (8-0, 6-0) secured its place atop District 3 by jumping out to a 35-0 halftime lead and cruising to the finish. The Spartans had 276 yards of offense but forced three turnovers in the win.

North Tama (1-7, 0-6) was led by Michael Schrier, who rushed for 54 yards and threw for 15 yards. Logan Siemens had nine carries for 35 yards as well.

Gavin Rausch and Schrier had five tackles apiece to lead the Redhawk defense. Chaz Hall and Ryan Hosek both had interceptions.

GMG succumbs to Colo-NESCO in district finale

GARWIN — The GMG football team suffered defeat in its last district contest, falling 78-22 to Colo-NESCO in Friday’s 8-Man District 4 finale.

GMG quarterback Colin Teske completed 8-of-21 passes for 143 yards and two touchdowns. Jabari Woodbury was the top target, pulling down six receptions for 121 yards and both Wolverine touchdowns. Woodbury also had a 78-yard fumble return for a touchdown, the only other score for GMG (0-8, 0-5).

Breckin Clatt rushed for 143 yards and three TDs to lead Colo-NESCO (4-4, 3-2).

Mustangs blanked by No. 6 Aplington-Parkersburg

PARKERSBURG — The East Marshall football team was held to 86 yards of total offense in a 50-0 loss to No. 6 Aplington-Parkersburg in Friday’s regular-season finale. The Mustangs (0-8, 0-5) finished winless for the first time since 2018.

Quarterback Jacob Farrington threw for 44 yards, while Tyler Fuller was East Marshall’s leading rusher with 16 yards. Adrian Arifi had two catches for 30 yards to lead the receivers. Drew Wheater led the defense with 5.5 tackles.

Aplington-Parkersburg (7-1, 4-1) won Class 1A District 3 after racking up 245 rushing yards in the wire-to-wire win. Adam Schipper had 85 yards and two touchdowns, and Aidan Junker added 81 yards and two more scores.

The Falcons returned three interceptions for touchdowns.

GC/G-R boys lead local teams at NICL cross country

LA PORTE CITY — Kaden Lynch finished atop the field to lead the Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys’ cross country team to third place at the North Iowa Cedar League meet on Thursday at La Porte City Golf Club.

Lynch finished in front in a time of 16 minutes, 27.72 seconds, to lead the Spartans. Emerson Vokes was fourth in 16:56.77, Brennen Sager scored seventh in 17:10.41, Tyler Venenga was 12th in 17:34.82 and Brayden Wallis closed out GC/G-R’s scoring in 33rd place (18:56.85).

Oelwein won the team title with 43 points, Denver was second with 54 and GC/G-R was a close third with 57. East Marshall bridged the gap with 99 points for fourth place out of 12 scoring teams.

Mustang senior Joe Terrones led his squad in eighth place, crossing the finish line in 17:11.86. Patrick Rayburn was 15th in 17:46.73, Kaleb Grant came in 17th in 17:54.50, Brock Curtis was 23rd in 18:20.84, and Chandler Curtis collected 36th (19:09.57) to round out East Marshall’s team scoring.

On the girls’ side, GC/G-R came away with seventh place (153) and East Marshall was the last of 12 scoring teams (339).

The Spartans’ leading runner was freshman Grace Storjohann, who came in 12th in 20:42.46. Laney Dole was 23rd (21:16.93), Karlee Lynch claimed 36th (22:09.12) and Kali Aldrich finished 38th (22:21.27).

Mallory Ostroksi paced East Marshall in 56th place with a time of 23:16.73. Ava Hendricks was 59th (23:23.64) and Aubrey Lambi took 67th (23:47.61).

Tyynismaa second, STC boys fourth at WaMaC meet

INDEPENDENCE — Tommy Tyynismaa took second place and the South Tama County boys’ cross country team claimed fourth place at the WaMaC Conference meet on Thursday.

Tyynismaa finished in 16 minutes, 27.6 seconds to trail only Marion senior Jedidiah Osgood, who clocked in at 15:52.5 for the individual crown. STC’s James Brant was fifth in 17:00.5 to give the Trojans a pair of top-10 performers.

Braxten Rohrs (16th, 17:34.5), Cade Rosenberger (35th (18:16.8) and Kaden Kopsa (40th, 18:28.2) closed out the Trojans’ team scoring.

Marion won the team title with 61 points, followed by Mount Vernon-Lisbon (71), Solon (92) and STC (98) in the 11-team event.

The Trojan girls were last out of 10 teams, finishing with 297 points. Their top finisher was Kayla Heck, who placed 52nd in a time of 23:53.6. Autumn Elsbury (59th, 25:29.7), Andrea Padilla (60th, 25:45.2), Alex Castanon (66th, 27:43.1) and Maribel Castanon (69th, 29:21.0) completed South Tama’s team scoring.

Mount Vernon-Lisbon won the girls’ team title with 50 points, trailed by Solon (68) and Clear Creek-Amana (79).
