SPORTS SHORTS: Comets rally past Redhawks for district win

TRAER — The BCLUW football team forced six turnovers and scored the game’s final 18 points to beat North Tama 20-14, snapping the Redhawks’ six-game win streak against the Comets.

BCLUW (4-2) trailed 20-8 at halftime before turning the tide with turnovers and touchdowns. Walker Ashton, Lane Hartwig and Tyler Bracy each had scoring runs to help the Comets erase their halftime deficit.

The host Redhawks (1-5) outgained BCLUW 296-206 in total offense but couldn’t overcome six turnovers. Quarterback Kolt Knaack was 18-for-38 passing for 127 yards but four interceptions. Josh Dostal caught seven passes for 58 yards and Michael Schrier had five grabs for 56 yards.

Schrier led the Redhawk rushing attack with 11 carries for 108 yards and a touchdown. Knaack added 47 yards and two scores on the ground.

Ashton was 13-for-22 passing for 102 yards and also ran for two BCLUW touchdowns.

No. 4 West Marshall edges rival PCM, 13-12

STATE CENTER — The Class 2A No. 4 West Marshall football rallied back from a 12-0 deficit in the fourth quarter to beat PCM 13-12 in Friday’s District 7 showdown.

Quarterback Peyton Hart had a hand in both touchdowns in the fourth quarter for the Trojans (6-0, 3-0). He connected with Jace Eich on a 15-yard touchdown pass early in the final period and added a 4-yard touchdown run with 5:02 remaining to give West Marshall a 13-12 advantage. Andrew Tollefson’s extra-point kick on the first Trojan TD proved to be the deciding point.

The Trojans held PCM’s offense on downs, stopping the Mustangs (3-3, 2-1) at the 21-yard-line.

Hart finished 14-for-28 passing for 165 yards with a TD and an interception. He also rushed 20 times for 97 yards and a score. Eich finished with five catches for 80 yards, and Preston Reese had five grabs for 59 yards.

Austin Pfantz led the West Marshall defense with eight tackles and Grahm Nason had seven stops as well as a fumble recovery.

No. 6 Rebels rough up Northwood-Kensett

WAVERLY — Isaac Clark had a hand in all seven of Gladbrook-Reinbeck’s first-half touchdowns as the sixth-ranked Rebels routed Northwood-Kensett 78-0 in a non-district football game Thursday at Walston-Hoover Stadium.

The Rebels (6-0, 3-0) ran their season scoring average to 65.3 points per game with their highest output of the fall, running out to a 34-0 lead after the opening period. Clark had touchdown runs of 5, 3, 7 and 4 yards, and mixed in a 9-yard touchdown pass to Drew Eilers for good measure. He added two TD passes in the second period to push G-R’s lead to 48-0.

Clark finished 6-for-9 passing for 150 yards and three scores, and rushed seven times for 32 yards and four TDs. Austin Vaverka was the Rebels’ leading rusher, gaining 48 yards on four carries with a touchdown.

Hudson Clark had a 34-yard touchdown run, a 45-yard touchdown reception and a 55-yard kickoff return for another score. Caleb Egesdal added a 37-yard TD catch.

Luke Sienknecht led the Rebel defense with five tackles, including 2.5 stops for loss. G-R’s defense tallied two safeties in the blowout win. Northwood-Kensett (2-4) totaled just 33 yards of offense.
