Fast start fuels MCC victory

Tigers trounce Grand View JV

T-R PHOTO BY NOAH ROHLFING - Marshalltown Community College sophomore guard Trey Sinegal (10) drives through the lane against Grand View University defenders Corey Phillips (54) and Carson VandeLune (14) during the first half of Monday’s basketball game at the Student Activity Center.

Order was established in the first five minutes of Monday’s battle between Marshalltown Community College men’s basketball and Grand View JV.

a 10-2 advantage signaled that the Tigers meant business — and using their size advantage to control the paint, they steadily built a lead.

A barrage of threes in the first half led to a 49-25 halftime deficit, which grew to 66-31 midway through the second half and a 95-61 final score.

The win puts MCC at 4-6 early in the season and gives them a bounce back after a difficult loss to Northeast CC on Saturday.

Head coach Ryan Flack said the team came out in the right mindset and put its foot on the pedal after a frustrating week of near-misses and three losses by a single possession each.

“We weren’t going to take these guys for granted,” Flack said. “I was happy, especially after a tough 10 days here, everybody got to play and everybody contributed. That’s what we wanted to do.”

Marshalltown shot 50 percent from the floor and hit 10-of-20 shots from 3-point range, adding to a solid offensive display with a wide range of scorers. Only two MCC players reached double-figures (Trey Sinegal with 18 and Tyler Burrows with 10) but 13 different players put points on the board. Flack said much of those 10 threes came from the Tigers playing inside-out – driving the ball or feeding their post players before kicking it back out for open looks.

MCC posts controlled the paint in ways other than just scoring, causing havoc inside and occupying the Grand View posts. This allowed Burrows and Sinegal to lead the game in rebounds with eight and nine, respectively.

Defensively, Flack said there were some lapses in effort but the Tigers’ full-court press defense did cause some quick shots from Grand View – which in turn allowed MCC to get more possessions and opportunities in transition for easy points.

MCC’s first-half dominance waned at times in the second half,, with the Tigers veering into cruise control at points and sitting at 70 points for roughly four minutes of game time. Flack seemed less than thrilled with the lax approach to the offense in the second half, particularly with big games coming up against Iowa Community College Athletic Conference foes DMACC (No. 12 in Division II) on Wednesday and Sauk Valley on Saturday.

He stressed this to the team after the game as they look to end what has been a very difficult month on the court.

“We’ve set it up to have some success here,” Flack said. “We’ve gotta play for 40 minutes. We can’t take possessions off. I even thought there was a little bit in the second half we just coasted a little bit.

“It’s a process. We’ve got to understand we have to play for 40 minutes and every possession matters.”

MCC plays at DMACC Wednesday at 7 p.m.
