Fifteen different players scored for the Marshalltown Community College men's basketball team as the Tigers trampled the Mount Mercy College junior varsity on Tuesday night at the Student Activity Center.
Trey Sinegal scored 14 points to lead MCC and Zion Obanla added 14 as the team's only double-digit scorers. Tyler Burrows added nine points, while Lavarius Hampton had nine points off the bench and Zidane Moore scored eight in reserve.
Obanla led the Tigers with nine rebounds and Sinegal had five assists and three steals. Sinegal, Moore and Hampton had six boards apiece.
MCC (6-7) led 41-25 at the half and poured it on with a 55-27 advantage after the break.
Landen Sullivan and Caden Schroeder led Mount Mercy with 16 points apiece, and Calon Amey added 12.
The Tigers resume play on Saturday with a 3 p.m. home game against Iowa Central.
Trojans stroll to 2-0 in Heart of Iowa play
STATE CENTER -- Three players scored in double figures as the West Marshall boys' basketball team improved to 2-0 in Heart of Iowa Conference play with a 68-58 victory over Perry here Tuesday night.
The Trojans (2-1, 2-0) trailed 17-9 after the opening period before overtaking the Bluejays with a 24-11 second-quarter advantage.
Andrew Tollefson led West Marshall with 15 points and five assists. Owen Siegert finished with 13 points, six rebounds four assists and two steals, while TJ Schuler tallied 12 points and a team-leading eight rebounds.
Peyton Hart pitched in with eight points, Grahm Nason added seven points, and Preston Reese had six points and six boards.
Drake Levan led Perry (1-2, 0-2) with 21 points.
Mustangs come up short in league opener
GRUNDY CENTER -- The East Marshall boys' basketball team came up short in its NICL West Division opener, falling 77-49 to host Grundy Center on Tuesday night.
Junior Brown led East Marshall with 15 points, while Leland Hamilton-Youngbird chipped in with 11 points off the bench. Landen Neuroth finished with seven points, five rebounds and three blocked shots, while Adrian Arifi and Carter Lavender tallied five points apiece. Carter Anderson led the Mustangs (0-4, 0-1) with six rebounds.
Kiburis, Rebels pull away from South Hardin
REINBECK -- William Kiburis poured in 25 points and Drew Eilers recorded a double-double as the Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys' basketball team won its NICL West Division opener, beating South Hardin 68-50 on Tuesday night.
Kiburis added seven rebounds and seven assists to his tally, while Caleb Egesdal racked up 16 points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots. Eilers finished with 10 points and 13 rebounds, including seven offensive boards.
Luke Riffey chipped in with eight points and Austin Vaverka added six points off the bench for the Rebels (2-0, 1-0).
Redhawks push past Wolverines in fourth quarter
GARWIN -- North Tama outscored GMG 20-9 in the fourth quarter to rally for a 55-48 victory in Tuesday's Iowa Star South boys' basketball game.
GMG (1-1, 1-1) jumped out to a 17-12 lead after the first quarter and held a 39-35 advantage heading into the fourth, but the visiting Redhawks (2-1, 2-1) rallied for the win.
GMG was led by Colin Teske with 14 points, five rebounds and four steals. Jabari Woodbury finished with nine points, Brayden Duden had seven points and five boards, and Kaleb Gill added five points for the Wolverines.
No statistics were available for North Tama as of press time.
Mustangs routed by Grundy Center girls
GRUNDY CENTER -- Morgan Neuroth scored 23 points for East Marshall girls' basketball team but it wasn't enough for the Mustangs to keep up with Grundy Center in a 61-30 defeat Tuesday night.
Neuroth went 8-for-13 from the floor and hit all six free throws. The Mustangs' next-highest scorer was Makayla Hala with five points and Vaeda Bryan had two. Aliva Neuroth led the team in rebounds with four.
East Marshall trailed 49-15 through three quarters before doubling their point tally in the fourth, but the Spartans were well at hand and had two double-digit scorers. Ellery Luhring led the Spartans with 19 points and she was closely followed by Carlie Willis with 14 points.
