High-flying Raiders lap GMG
GARWIN — GMG boys’ basketball head coach Tammy Woodbury knew coming into Thursday night’s matchup with Class 1A No. 7 Dunkerton that the Raiders’ fast-paced offense would be difficult to contain.
The Raiders lived up to their high-octane reputation and then some, scoring 68 points in the first half of play alone on their way to a 106-50 win over the host Wolverines. Dunkerton is now 9-0 on the season, while GMG drops to 4-6.
Right from the opening tip, the Raiders made their intent clear with a quick first basket. From there, the Wolverines didn’t get any letup. After the first quarter it was 28-14 and despite some solid offensive process from the Wolverines, the shots weren’t falling at a quick enough rate to keep up with the frenetic pace Dunkerton was laying down.
“When they pressured us, we broke their press,” Woodbury said. “Just making the shots. They were worried about if they were going to get blocked or what was coming, so just concentrating and making our shots [is big].”
In the second quarter, Dunkerton put the game to bed with a 26-6 run taking the lead from 31-17 to 57-23. In all, the Raiders scored 40 points in the second quarter alone. Through two quarters it was 68-29, and Dylan Marquart had 28 points thanks to eight made 3-pointers. He would finish the night with a game-high 37 points and 11 shots made from deep.
With the state’s assist-leading point guard in Casey Gardner (15 points) pushing the pace at every opportunity and looking up the court for teammates, easy opportunities in transition were available for Raiders big man Preston Gillespie — who came into Thursday’s game averaging 26.9 points per outing. Gillespie finished with 36 points and 15 made baskets. It was an attack the Wolverines simply weren’t able to stop or keep in front.
Woodbury said GMG needs to take lessons from this game and improve on the defensive end of the floor.
“We knew they were going to be fast and knew we had to get back on defense,” Woodbury said. “Just looking to continue to work on defense and control what we can control.”
Jabari Woodbury was GMG’s leading scorer with 14 points, while Grady Dieleman and Kaleb Gill had seven points each. Partrick Savatdy scored six points and hit two 3-pointers.
GMG’s next contest is Saturday at 5 p.m. on the road against Lone Tree.
