SPORTS SHORTS: No. 6 Bobcat boys tennis blows past Hoover, 9-0

The Marshalltown boys’ tennis team breezed through its season-opening meet on a warm and windy Thursday at the Marshalltown Court Complex, blanking Des Moines Hoover 9-0.

The Bobcats, ranked sixth in Class 2A by the Iowa Boys Tennis Coaches, won every game and shut out the visiting Huskies 6-0, 6-0 in all nine contested matches. There were only three doubles bouts instead of five because of a shortage of players for Hoover.

Scoring straight-set singles wins for MHS were Jason Strand, Gavin Jablonski, Nile Christensen, Jacob Thiessen, Isaac Benscoter and Cael Sandvick. In doubles competition, Christensen and Jablonski won at No. 1, Strand and Thiessen scored the shutout at No. 2, while Drew Loney joined Benscoter got the final love-love triumph for Marshalltown.

The Bobcats are back in action Saturday at the Valley Invite with dual meets scheduled against Des Moines East and third-ranked Valley.
