NEWTON -- Newton scored seven runs in the bottom of the first inning to lay the foundation on a 10-0, five-inning victory over the Marshalltown baseball team on Tuesday night.
The Bobcats (1-3) collected four hits in suffering their third-straight loss. Newton (3-1) notched four hits in its first at-bat.
"We are going through some early adversity right now," said Marshalltown interim head coach Allen Mann. "We have no choice, we need to get back to work because [Wednesday] we have a talented Roosevelt team coming to town. In order to give ourselves a chance we have to put this evening behind us and go put forth our best effort."
Nick Rebik led Marshalltown with two hits, leading off the game with a single and adding a two-out triple in the top of the fifth. Tayven Dutton and Caleb Kusserow both singled in the third.
Newton starting pitcher Turner Williams struck out six and walked one over 4 1/3 innings for the win. Brady Bauer got the final two outs for the Cardinals.
Zander Stupp took the loss for the Bobcat pitching staff as he was unable to escape the first inning. MHS committed four of its eight errors in Newton's seven-run first.
"Eight errors is way too much," said Mann. "I talked to the kids about wanting the ball on defense. Have confidence in your abilities and go try to make a play. That's all we will ask as a coaching staff."
The host Cardinals had seven hits, highlighted by Skyler Milheiser's three-run triple in the first.
Marshalltown entertains Roosevelt for a varsity doubleheader starting at 5 p.m. today.
"I look forward to seeing how our kids respond with a quick turnaround," said Mann. "I'm confident they will pick themselves and each other up and put forth their best effort."
