SPORTS SHORTS: Laube leads Spartans to 2nd at NICL tennis tourney

WATERLOO — Grundy Center’s Tanner Laube won the No. 1 singles title at the North Iowa Cedar League boys tennis meet at Byrnes Park Tennis Center on Tuesday.

Laube’s title steered the Spartans to a second-place team finish with 35 team points, trailing only Aplington-Parkersburg’s 53 total points. Union and Oelwein were close behind with 32 points each and Columbus was fifth with 27 points.

The Spartan junior finished 5-0 on the day, including a 6-3 win against runner-up Tate Neymeyer of A-P.

Elias Cakerice and Jaren Lauver added runner-up finishes at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, respectively, with 4-1 records on the day. Cakerice and Lauver also teamed up for Grundy Center’s best doubles finish, placing second at No. 2 doubles behind Neymeyer and Keegan Bolhuis of A-P.

Spartan boys track wins Cougar Relays

SUMNER — Grundy Center boys track and field won 10 events and racked up 218 points to run away with the team title at the Cougar Relays at Sumner-Fredericksburg High School on Tuesday.

The Spartans finished ahead of the hosting Cougars (142 points) and Tripoli (106) as the leader of the seven-team field.

Individual winners for the Spartans included Brayden Wallis in the 400, Tyler Venenga in the 800, Emerson Vokes in the 1,600, Kaden Lynch in the 3,200, Tate Jirovsky in the 400 hurdles and Patrick Brown III in the high jump.

The Spartans also won the shuttle hurdle, 4×800, distance medley and 4×400 relays.

Mustang boys 6th at Cyclone Co-Ed

DENVER — East Marshall boys track and field locked down two individual titles in distance running events en route to a sixth-place team finish at a Denver Co-Ed on Monday.

Joe Terrones won the 1,600-meter run in 4:50.54 and Patrick Slifer was the 3,200 champion in 11:17.11.

Terrones was also part of the 4×800 relay team that finished second, along with Landen Neuroth, Alex Jacobson and Kaleb Grant in 8:50.27. Grant added a third-place finish in the 400.

Ulis, Ogundele announce landing spots

Former Iowa basketball players Ahron Ulis and Josh Ogundele have found their new homes, and one of them is transferring within the Big Ten Conference.

Ulis announced Monday that he will transfer to Nebraska, while Ogundele has opted to join the men’s basketball program at Middle Tennessee State. Both players entered the transfer portal on March 22, Ogundele for the second straight year.

Ulis, a 6-foot-3, 190-pound point guard who started in 27 of the 32 games he played last season for the Hawkeyes, helps fill a backcourt need for coach Fred Hoiberg’s program and joins the Cornhuskers with two seasons of eligibility remaining.

Ulis averaged 22.6 minutes per game last season while collecting 6.1 points and 1.6 rebounds per game for a 19-14 Hawkeye team. He finished the year tied for third on Iowa’s assist charts with 88.

Ogundele, a 6-10 center, saw only limited action in 38 appearances over the past three seasons for Iowa.

He averaged 1.5 points and 1.3 rebounds per game overall during his career and took the court in just 11 games last season, averaging 1.9 points and 1.7 rebounds in 6.5 minutes of playing time.

At Middle Tennessee State, the native of London, England joins a program that matched Iowa’s overall record last season.
