SPORTS SHORTS: Neuroth, Mustangs take down Comets, 10-0

LE GRAND — Morgan Neuroth twirled a six-hit shutout and had three hits of her own to help the East Marshall softball team turn back BCLUW 10-0 in six innings here Tuesday night.

It was the season opener for the host Mustangs, who rapped out 11 hits to beat their former NICL West Division rival.

Neuroth was 3-for-4 with a double, a run and two RBIs. From the pitcher’s circle she struck out six, walked none and hit one batter while surrendering six singles.

Peyton Grabenbauer was 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI, Bailey Grant had two hits and the game-ending RBI, and Makayla Kerber was 2-for-3 with a two-run single and a two-run double.

Klayre Gallentine took the loss in the circle for BCLUW (1-1), allowing seven earned runs on nine hits and four walked over five innings. She struck out three.

Cassie Nason was 2-for-3 to lead the Comets. Grace Farnsworth, Morgan Bergman, Savannah Moeller and Marissa Schnathorst each added a hit.

Bobcats eliminated by No. 4 Waukee Northwest

WAUKEE — Aidan Kongtahworn scored two goals and the Class 4A No. 4 Waukee Northwest boys’ soccer team eliminated Marshalltown 3-0 in Monday’s Substate 2 semifinals.

Ayden Gabrielson added a goal for the Wolves (14-3), while Eric Moncada contributed two assists and Christian Cowherd another. Will Lookingbill and Aidan Gucfa combined on the clean sheet in net for Waukee Northwest.

Aaron Ordaz Zambrano, Nicolas Orozco, Diego Tejada, Erik Ibarra Madrigal, Ari Herrera and Rodrigo Lopez each recorded a shot on goal for the Bobcats, who finished the year 6-10 overall.

Aleczander Scales allowed one goal on three shots in the first half, while Alan Gonzalez Ramirez gave up two goals on six shots in the second half.

Waukee Northwest hosts No. 11 Ankeny Centennial (8-5) in Wednesday’s substate final.

Rebels roll into substate soccer finale

WATERLOO — Hudson Clark scored two goals to help the Class 1A No. 1 Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys’ soccer squad advance to the substate finals with a 4-0 win over No. 8 North Fayette Valley on Monday night at Waterloo Columbus.

Tyler Nolder had a goal and three assists, while Isaac Clark added a goal for the Rebels (17-0) in the Substate 2 semifinal. Aiden Hunemuller recorded an assist, while goalkeeper Max Anderson needed to make only two saves for the shutout.

GC/G-R hosts Denver (9-9) in Wednesday’s 7 p.m. substate final in Reinbeck. The Rebels beat the Cyclones 5-0 and 1-0 in their regular-season meetings this spring.

Siegert’s near-shutout lifts Trojans past Saydel

STATE CENTER — Owen Siegert pitched all but one out of a one-hit shutout and the West Marshall baseball team opened Heart of Iowa Conference play with a 3-0 win over Saydel on Monday evening.

Siegert struck out 13, walked five and hit a batter, allowing only a Jace Gebhart single to the visiting Eagles (2-4, 0-1). Beckham DeSotel struck out the only batter he faced to finish on the mound for the Trojans (4-1, 1-0).

AJ Dee had two hits, including a double, and drove in a run to lead West Marshall offensively. Evan Siegert had an RBI double while Owen Siegert, Noah DeSotel and DJ Ridout each contributed singles.

Mason Hicks pitched all six innings for Saydel, striking out four in the loss.

Redhawks match Collins-Maxwell’s rally

TRAER — The North Tama baseball team matched Collins-Maxwell’s two-run fifth inning with one of its own to overtake the Spartans for a 3-2 triumph in Monday’s Iowa Star Conference South Division opener.

Tyler Popelka pitched a three-hitter for North Tama (2-1, 1-0) to get the win. He struck out four and walked two, needing only 75 pitches to go the distance.

Kolt Knaack was 2-for-2 with two walks and a run scored to lead the Redhawks at the plate. Michael Schrier singled and Josh Dostal added an RBI single. Henry Hansen drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, and Kayler Morris singled and scored.

Wolverines open league play with first win

GREEN MOUNTAIN — The GMG baseball team got out to a fast start and finished off Baxter for its first win of the season in Monday’s Iowa Star Conference South Division opener, 11-5.

Kaleb Gill went 4-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored to lead the Wolverines (1-3, 1-0). Zach Duncan was 3-for-3 with two doubles, while Colin Teske and Noah Teske both had a double among their two hits.

Wyatt Jackson, Colton Hauser and Rider Kupka also had two hits apiece for GMG, which led 3-0 after one inning and 8-1 through five frames.

Colin Teske pitched 5 1/3 innings for the win, allowing three runs on four hits with two walks and one hit batter. He struck out four. Brayden Duden got the final five outs, allowing two runs on four hits and three total walks. He struck out two.

Comet softball kicks off new season with league win

MCCALLSBURG — Cassie Nason had three hits to help the BCLUW softball team win its season opener on Monday night, beating Colo-NESCO 10-3 in an Iowa Star Conference South Division clash.

Nason was 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs, while her courtesy runner Marrisa Grant scored two runs. Morgan Bergman and winning pitcher Klayre Gallentine had two hits apiece, including a triple for Gallentine.

Gallentine struck out six and walked two in the complete-game win, allowing six singles and one earned run.

GMG softball outscores Bolts in conference opener

GREEN MOUNTAIN — The GMG softball team scored seven unanswered runs to pull away and beat Baxter 16-7 in Monday’s season opener for both teams.

GMG had a 9-0 lead before the visiting Bolts struck for all seven of their runs in the top of the fifth. The Wolverines answered in kind, scoring three times in the fifth and four more in the sixth to seal the win.

Leadoff batter Dylan Mathern went 4-for-5 with two doubles and two RBIs to lead GMG offensively. Abby Parks had two hits, including a triple, and two RBIs, while Blake Mathern was 2-for-5 with three runs scored.

Adelyn Sienknecht earned the win in the circle, allowing three earned runs on five hits and two walks while striking out 10. GMG was ticketed for three errors while Baxter committed 10 defensive miscues.

Losing pitcher Holly Zahurones walked 11 and hit two batters for the Bolts.
