SPORTS SHORTS: WM girls track 4th at Heart of Iowa meet

DES MOINES — West Marshall girls track and field had two conference champions en route to scoring 90.5 points to finish fourth out of eight teams at the Heart of Iowa Conference Meet at Saydel High School on Thursday night.

Roland-Story won the girls team title with 150 points, followed by PCM with 131.

Emelia Hauser won the 400-meter hurdles in 1:09.76. She was also the anchor on the winning distance medley team, sharing the honor with Amelia Ranson, Savanna Davenport and Ryleigh Storjohann clocking in at 4:38 flat.

The Trojans also had runner-up finishes from Kylee Schuler in the high jump, Abby Tollefson in the 100 hurdles and the shuttle hurdle relay team.

West Marshall’s boys scored 44 points to finish seventh. The shuttle hurdle and distance medley teams earned a bronze medal each.

Jirovsky wins NICL boys golf meet

CEDAR FALLS — Grundy Center’s Judd Jirovsky shot an even-par 72 to win the individual title at the North Iowa Cedar League boys golf conference meet at Pheasant Ridge Golf Course in Cedar Falls on Thursday.

Jirovsky finished two strokes ahead of a group of four golfers at 74, including East Marshall’s Cody Weaver. The Spartans were fourth in the team race with a 322 team score — A-P won the team title with a 315; the top five teams in the standings were separated by just 10 strokes.

Ben Wegmann followed for the Spartans with an 81 and Preston Martens shot 82, with Sullivan Dirks closing out the scoring with an 87.

The Mustangs were 13th in the standings with a 398 team score. Jackson Bidwell added an 87 for East Marshall.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck finished 14th with a 399, led by Austin Gehring with a 98.

Two wins for STC’s Tyynismaa at WaMaC meet

MANCHESTER — Tommy Tyynismaa captured gold in the 800-meter and 1600-meter races to lead South Tama boys track and field at the WaMaC Conference Super Meet at West Delaware High School on Thursday night.

Tyynismaa won the 800 in 1:59.46 and triumphed in the 1,600 in 4:31.31. He was also part of the distance medley and 4×800 relay teams that finished second.

The STC boys placed in a tie for eighth out of 11 teams with 42 points. Solon won the team title with 157 points.

South Tama’s girls were 11th with 15 points. Kortney Babinat earned second in the shot put and Emma Harwick was third in the high jump.

Spartan boys 2nd at NICL track meet

DIKE — Grundy Center boys track and field scored 111 points to finish at the NICL Mega Meet at Dike-New Hartford High School on Thursday night.

The Spartans got event titles from Tyler Venenga in the open 800, and the 4×400 and 4×800 relays.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck’s Logan Giesking won the boys high jump with a best height of 6-1.

Grundy Center’s girls scored 66 points for sixth place overall. Grace Storjohann won the open 800 for the Spartans and was part of the winning 4×800 relay.
