Marshalltown Community College has named Dylan Longley as its new women’s basketball coach, athletic director Ryan Flack announced on Wednesday.
Longley takes over the reins left vacant after a tumultuous season in which head coach Carey Phariss left the position in December. Assistant coach Bryant Hedgeman was named the interim coach for the final 16 games of the season — the Tigers went 0-25 in 2022-23.
Longley has been coaching since 2015, when he began his career as an assistant coach at Wisconsin-River Falls. He was the Director of Basketball Operations and a part of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference’s Staff of the Year.
Longley was the women’s basketball graduate assistant at Central Methodist University in 2018-19, and he joined the staff at North Dakota State College of Science in 2019-20 as an assistant coach. The Wildcats made the NJCAA National Tournament that season.
A year later, Longley was an assistant coach at Lake Region State College. From there he went to Palo Verde College in Blythe, Calif., where in 2021 he became head coach of the first women’s basketball team in school history. He was head coach of the Pirates for three seasons.
“The experience I gained at PVC makes the transition to MCC much easier as I’ve already shown I can build a program and maybe surpass people’s expectations,” Longley said. “The location was something that attracted me right away in terms of recruiting region. The Midwest is an area that I’ve recruited my entire career and the ability to have major cities within 4-5 hours allows me to cast a wide net with recruiting.”
Longley will join Marshalltown Community College as an assistant to athletic director Ryan Flack, serving as the athletics coordinator.
“We are excited to have Dylan join us as the next head women’s basketball coach at Marshalltown,” said Flack, who is also the head men’s basketball coach. “After an extensive search, we felt Dylan was the right candidate to lead our women’s basketball program and move them forward at the NJCAA D-II level. I look forward to working with Dylan as he prepares for the 2023 season.”
The Tigers haven’t won more than 11 games in the last nine seasons.
“My long-term goal for MCC women’s basektball is to grow and develop into a team that competes in the top-4 of the conference year-in and year-out,” Longley said. “This isn’t something that will happen in one year, but with what we have to offer here it is definitely a goal that’s attainable.
“I don’t want to set the bar too high for us in year one because that’s unfair to my players, but I truly believe that we are bringing in a great group of young ladies that can achieve anything they want.”
