JESUP -- The East Marshall baseball team had its five-game winning streak halted on the road with Tuesday's 4-1 loss at Jesup.
The host J-Hawks (10-8) scored single runs in the first, fourth, fifth and sixth innings to overcome East Marshall's lone tally in the top of the sixth.
Connor Kriegel took the loss on the mound for the Mustangs (7-13), allowing three runs -- one earned -- on three hits and one walk over five innings. He struck out one. Xavier Slifer surrendered one unearned run in the sixth, allowing one hit and one walk.
Connor Hassin hit a double, Jacob Farrington had a single and an RBI, and Alex Jacobson accounted for the only other hit for East Marshall.
West Marshall marches past Rams in league play
JEFFERSON -- Grayson Shaver struck out eight over six innings and the Class 2A No. 8 West Marshall baseball team piled up 15 hits on its way to a 14-3 victory over Greene County in a Heart of Iowa Conference match on Monday night.
Shaver allowed three runs on four hits, one walk and one hit batsman, striking out eight for the win. Beckham DeSotel gave up a hit and a walk but struck out three to finish it off.
DJ Ridout was 3-for-4 with two doubles and three runs scored to lead West Marshall (19-5, 11-1). AJ Dee, Caden Pfantz, Noah DeSotel and Holden Simms had two hits apiece, including doubles for Pfantz and Simms. Evan Siegert, Owen Siegert, Noah DeSotel and Pfantz drove in two runs apiece.
Hawks score too much for Trojan baseball
TAMA -- The South Tama baseball team couldn't keep pace with West Delaware in a WaMaC Conference sweep for the visiting Hawks on Monday night.
West Delaware (17-8), a team receiving votes in the Class 3A rankings, won 7-0 and 12-2.
STC (4-16) managed just two hits in the opener -- one each for Kyan McBride and Daniel Wiese. Starting pitcher Nolan Upah took the loss on the mound, allowing two runs on five hits and five walks over four innings while striking out four.
West Delaware scored eight run in the first inning of the second game and ended it after six frames. The Trojans made eight errors to hinder their chances.
Miguel Medina doubled and scored for South Tama, while Micheal Henry singled and scored. Wiese had the team's only RBI.
Henry took the loss, allowing eight unearned runs before he could get out of the first inning. He allowed four hits, one walk and three hit batters in two-thirds of an inning.
Pitching powers Rebels to sweep of Tigers
ELDORA -- The Gladbrook-Reinbeck baseball team captured an NICL West Division sweep on the road Monday, beating South Hardin 4-1 and 10-2 in league play.
Nick Tscherter pitched a three-hitter for the win in the opener, striking out five in the complete-game performance. William Kiburis and Tscherter both hit a double, while Caleb Egesdal, Logan Giesking, Austin Vaverka and Hudson Clark each had a single for the Rebels (19-10, 9-1).
G-R broke open a close game in the nightcap by scoring five runs in the sixth inning in support of Kiburis, who allowed just one hit but walked three and hit two batters. He struck out 17.
The Rebels piled up 13 hits with a Drew Eilers double accounting for the lone extra-base hit. Kiburis, Egesdal, Tscherter, Giesking and Luke Riffey had two singles each.
Comets can't close the deal against South Hardin
ELDORA -- The BCLUW softball team had Class 2A No. 14 South Hardin on the ropes before the Tigers rallied for an 8-7, eight-inning victory in Monday's non-conference clash.
BCLUW (8-10) led 6-0 before South Hardin got its bats going with three runs in the fifth inning and three more in the sixth. The Comets clinged to a 7-6 lead going into the seventh, before the host Tigers (21-5) rallied for the tying run in their last at-bat and the game-winning run on a walk-off in the eighth.
Raegan Crawford was 3-for-5 with two doubles, a run and two RBIs to lead the Comets offensively. Cassie Nason was 2-for-5 and her courtesy runner Brinna Benson scored twice. Klayre Gallentine had a double and two RBIs, and her runner Allison Ward scored once.
Gallentine was tagged for eight runs, but only three earned, on seven hits, five walks and one hit batsman. She struck out five in 7 1/3 innings, but the Comets couldn't overcome seven errors.
Taya Hollingsworth was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored to lead South Hardin. Hailey Rosonke drove in three runs and struck out 15 from the circle.
Spartan softball comes up short at AGWSR
ACKLEY -- The Grundy Center softball team reached eight runs for just the fourth time this season but it still wasn't enough to beat AGWSR as the Cougars claimed an NICL West Division sweep here Monday night, 13-8 and 2-0.
The Spartans (4-18, 1-7) led the opening game 6-5 before AGWSR (7-14, 3-4) broke free for eight runs in the home half of the sixth inning on its way to a 13-8 triumph.
Carlie Willis was 2-for-4 with a run scored and three RBIs to lead the Spartans offensively. Maddy Hendershot was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored, while Allison Koch was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Ava Heeren also had two hits.
Koch took the loss for her one inning pitched in relief of Lucy Lebo, giving up eight runs (four earned) on three hits and four walks. Grundy Center committed six errors.
In the nightcap, AGWSR tallied two runs in the second inning and that was enough for a 2-0 victory. Sidney Schfer scattered eight hits for the pitching win, striking out just two while walking none.
Hendershot and Willis had three hits apiece, including a double for Willis, and Lauren Zajac was 2-for-3 at the pate. Hendershot pitched all six innings in a losing cause, allowing two runs on five hits and five walks while striking out seven.
STC softball swept aside by West Delaware
TAMA -- The South Tama softball team was swept by West Delaware in Monday's WaMaC Conference doubleheader, falling 15-0 in three innings and 20-0 in four innings.
West Delaware (11-14) set the tone by scoring 13 runs in its first at-bat of the night.
Taylor Johannsen, Millie Mathes-Henle and Samantha Schneider each had a hit for the Trojans (0-21).
Vedah Langel was 3-for-3 with two home runs and six RBIs to lead the Hawks in the opener.
Alonda Bolanos-Lupian was 2-for-2 at the plate to lead South Tama in the nightcap. Schneider and Mathes-Henle each added a single.
West Marshall narrowly misses against ranked Rams
JEFFERSON -- Greene County got two runs in the sixth inning and West Marshall could only get half that in the seventh as the Trojans suffered a 2-1 loss to the Class 3A No. 14 Rams in Monday's Heart of Iowa Conference softball contest.
Consecutive hits by Emma Hoyle and Emma Stream plated a pair of runs for Greene County (14-5, 10-1) in the sixth.
Ciera Randall's solo home run accounted for West Marshall's only hit of the game, but it got the Trojans (11-11, 4-7) within one swing at the end.
Hoyle struck out 16 and walked none in the pitching circle for the Rams. Aubree Greenwood surrendered just six hits while striking out three for West Marshall.
