Ryan Schmit scored medalist honors for the second time in as many meets and the Marshalltown boys’ golf team prevailed again as well, lambasting Des Moines Lincoln 317-436 on Monday at Elmwood Country Club.

The Bobcats (3-0) scored the best six rounds of the meet — nine if you include the junior varsity — and had little trouble in defeating Lincoln in their Iowa Alliance Conference dual.

Schmit’s 2-over-par round of 72 included four birdies, three of them in his even-par 35 on the back nine.

“Elmwood is a strong test no matter who you’re playing against and I thought we played well and stayed focused on our own games even though the scoreboard wasn’t all that close,” said MHS head coach Lucas Johnson. “Our top three guys did a nice job steadying things out after a rough hole or two. I was especially proud of Ty Faltys in particular, who kept it together after a rough stretch of holes on the front nine. To see him keep it together and finish his last three holes in 1-under showed the kind of mental toughness we’ll need to be successful this year.”

Faltys finished as the runner-up medalist to Schmit by shooting a 6-over 76. Back-to-back double bogeys tried to derail his trek, but he stayed the course with a birdie on the par-4 ninth hole.

Eli Polley picked up third-place honors with his round of 80, while Brecken Payne and Jacob Thiessen shared the final scoring round with 89s. Adam Boone posted a 90 to round out the varsity scoring.

Parker Christen led the junior varsity with his round of 94 as the Bobcat JV totaled a 392 team score, also defeating Lincoln.

“It would have been nice to have one other score close to 80 or better, but that’s part of the learning curve at this stage of the season,” Johnson said. “Especially in the back half of the lineup, you’re looking for guys who can grind out a score even when things aren’t going well.”

Aaron Ho led the visiting Railsplitters with his round of 100.

The Bobcats play their other home course later this week, entertaining Ames and Fort Dodge for an Alliance triangular on Wednesday at the American Legion Memorial Golf Course. Tee time is at 10 a.m.
