SPORTS SHORTS: Redhawks handcuffed by Wapsie Valley

FAIRBANK — The North Tama football team had its two-game win streak stopped by Wapsie Valley as the host Warriors won 45-0 in Friday’s Class A District 3 clash.

Wapsie Valley’s defense allowed North Tama just three first downs in the decisive defeat. The Redhawks (2-3, 2-2) managed just 74 yards of total offense, while the host Warriors (4-1, 3-0) piled up 397 yards — all but 20 on the ground.

Traeton Sauerbrei ran 17 times for 212 yards and four touchdowns for Wapsie Valley.

Kolt Knaack was 6-for-12 passing for 51 yards with an interception. Tyrus Luker had one catch for 33 yards and Gavin Rausch had four receptions for 16 yards. Josh Dostal ran three times for 12 yards to lead North Tama’s ground game.

Knaack led the Redhawk defense with seven tackles. Luker and Brayton Cibula both recovered fumbles.

Tigers break away from East Marshall

ELDORA — South Hardin broke free in the second half for a 55-20 victory over East Marshall in Friday’s Class 1A District 4 football contest.

The host Tigers (3-2, 2-0) led 21-14 at halftime before outscoring the Mustangs 34-6 in the second half.

South Hardin’s Jaxson Drury ran the ball 25 times for 223 yards and two touchdowns, while quarterback Peyton Welch was 13-for-22 passing for 129 yards and four touchdowns. Sam Benson had seven catches for 82 yards and three scores.

East Marshall (1-4, 0-2) got 159 yards through the air as Jacob Farrington finished 13-for-38 with two touchdowns and an interception. The Mustangs, however, finished with minus-14 yards rushing.

Blake Neuroth led the receiving corps with four catches for 61 yards and a touchdown, while Carter Lavender added five grabs for 59 yards.

Xavier Slifer led the defense with nine tackles, Johnathan Edel had eight stops, Neuroth had seven and Lavender 6.5. Lavender also had an interception while Slifer and Wyatt Stalzer both recovered fumbles.

No. 1 Williamsburg wallops South Tama

WILLIAMSBURG — Top-ranked Williamsburg walloped South Tama to the tune of a 61-6 defeat in Friday’s Class 3A District 5 football game.

The Raiders (5-0, 2-0) scored 34 points in the first quarter alone and led 54-6 at the half. Rayce Heitman returned two punts for touchdowns and also returned two interceptions for scores — all in the first 7 minutes, 7 seconds of the game.

Nile Sinn rushed five times for 128 yards and a TD, while Williamsburg quarterbacks Kellen Cockrell and Bryson Wetjen combined to throw for 101 yards and four touchdowns.

South Tama (0-5, 0-1) got an 8-yard touchdown pass from Daniel Wiese to Kinzer Jaennette for the team’s third TD of the season. Wiese finished 6-for-15 for 63 yards with three interceptions.

Cody Blocker rushed for 23 of STC’s 46 yards on the ground, while Jeramy Dolash had three catches for 42 yards.

Blocker led the Trojan defense with three tackles, and Kyan McBride recovered a fumble.

Bobcats edged by Dodgers in volleyball thriller

FORT DODGE — The Marshalltown volleyball team sustained its first Iowa Alliance Conference loss of the season, fighting back only to fall in five games at Fort Dodge — 25-7, 25-18, 16-25, 24-26, 15-11 — on Thursday night.

Amaya Moore led the Bobcats (4-12, 3-1) with nine kills on the night. Kennedy Feldman had six kills, Ellie Hughes had five kills, while Jordyn Daggett and Laney Danielson added four apiece. Gaby Estabrook and Hughes had 16 and eight assists, respectively.

Danielson led the front line defense with three blocks, while Daggett, Moore and Kinsley Bowie added two apiece. Libero Natalie Henson had a team-leading 23 digs and Hughes had 17 more.

The Bobcats served well as a team, going 78-for-85 with four aces. Daggett finished 18-for-19 with three aces to lead the way.

Mackenzie McIlrath had 13 kills and Meah McCaleb 10 to lead Fort Dodge (12-4, 4-0).

Spartans ward off Waterloo Columbus

WATERLOO — Class 1A’s top-ranked Grundy Center football team fought off Waterloo Columbus (3-2, 1-1) for a 21-14 victory on Thursday night.

The Spartans (5-0, 2-0) scored their first two touchdowns on fumble recoveries — one on a 1-yard score for Tiernan Vokes and another on Colin Gordon’s 97-yard scoop and score.

Gordon’s 1-yard touchdown plunge provided the deciding points.

Gordon finished 5-for-13 passing for 39 yards and an interception, while the Spartans ran 25 times for 147 yards. Gordon had 14 carries for 93 yards to lead the way, while Brody Zinkula carried eight times for 45 yards.

Pete Lebo and Ryker Thoren had nine tackles apiece to lead Grundy Center, while Zinkula added 8.5 stops.
