Spartans scuttle Pirates for district title

HUDSON — Grundy Center football secured its fourth-consecutive district title with a 28-3 win at Hudson on Thursday night.

The Spartans finished up an 8-0 regular season in addition to the Class 1A District 4 title.

Grundy Center put together a 14-play, 10-minute opening drive for a touchdown by Justin Knaack, but only led 7-0 at halftime.

“Everyone was a little frustrated,” Grundy Center head coach Travis Zajac said. “We had some untimely penalties and mental errors, but we were just able to play really good defense.”

Hudson had a strong drive to start the 2nd half, but the Spartans were able to hold the Pirates to a 25-yard field goal.

On the ensuing drive, the Spartans converted a 4th-and-long into six points on a hook-and-ladder play with Colin Gordon completing a short pass to Tiernan Vokes, who tossed a lateral to Justin Knaack for a 31-yard touchdown play.

Three plays later, Tanner Laube came down with an interception and the Spartans were on their way at last.

“They wanted to play better, we wanted them to play better, but there’s no apologies for finding a way to get it done,” Zajac said. “Our kids are gonna keep scrapping and find a way to finish the deal.”

Gordon finished with 14-of-22 passing for 156 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Knaack had 15 carries for 80 yards and two total touchdowns and Brody Zinkula ran three times for 31 yards and a score. Laube led Grundy Center’s receivers with seven catches for 60 yards.

Defensively, Laube, Zinkula and Pete Lebo all had a tackle for loss each.
