SPORTS SHORTS: Trojan boys second, Thompson fifth at HOAIC meet

JEFFERSON — The West Marshall boys’ cross country team finished in second place while Addie Thompson represented the girls’ squad in fifth place at Monday’s Heart of Iowa Conference meet.

Thompson was the Trojans’ top individual finisher of the day, clocking in at 21 minutes, 2.63 seconds to place fifth. Summer Kurth came in 28th (24:14.43), Carli Pfantz was 33rd (24:33.42), Olivia Randall was 36th (24:57.33) and Mia Christianson took 40th (25:20.31) to round out the team scoring.

Roland-Story was the girls’ team champion with 33 points, followed by PCM (55), Nevada (64), Perry (113), West Marshall (128), South Hamilton (154) and Saydel (178). Perry freshman Lily Myers was the individual champion (20:19.71).

On the boys’ side, all five scoring West Marshall runners finished 20th or better as the Trojans trailed only Nevada in the final standings. The Cubs collected just 28 points, West Marshall was runner-up with 75 points, and Roland-Story had 95 points in the eight-team meet. Nevada’s scoring runners all placed 10th or better, led by meet medalist Carter Holland (17:09.32).

Brevon Gibson led West Marshall in 11th place (18:24.62), followed closely by Dylan Thompson in 13th (18:37.67). Erick Rosas Canchola and Aiden Downs finished consecutively in 15th and 16th in respective times of 18:41.61 and 18:41.79. Jake Eirikson was the final scoring runner in 20th (18:53.31).

MCC men’s soccer shut out by top-ranked Hawks

Lewis Rourke scored two goals and the top-ranked Northeast men’s soccer team defeated Marshalltown Community College 4-0 on Saturday in an Iowa Community College Athletic Conferece clash at MCC.

The Hawks (15-0, 6-0) led 1-0 at halftime before scoring three goals after intermission. Edouard Nys and Sergia Aspas tallied goals for Northeast.

MCC managed just two shots on goal in the loss. Goalkeeper Seiya Sato made eight saves in net for the Tigers (4-7-2, 2-3-0), who were outshot 23-3 overall.

Bobcat netters go 1-3 at Oskaloosa Tournament

OSKALOOSA — The Marshalltown volleyball team went 1-3 at the Oskaloosa Tournament on Saturday, falling to 10-21 overall this season.

The Bobcats defeated Mount Pleasant, 21-16, 21-7, but fell to Ottumwa (21-9, 21-17), North Mahaska (21-16, 21-18) and Oskaloosa (21-13, 21-11).

Leading the Marshalltown attack for the day was Amaya Moore, who totaled 15 kills, and Laney Danielson, who had 14 kills. Ella Roush added 12 kills and Jordyn Daggett had 10 kills. Gaby Estabrook finished with 24 assists and Ellie Hughes had 22.

Defensively, Daggett led the way with 22 digs and Danielson had 20. McKenna Coleman contributed 17 digs and Natalie Henson had 14. Moore led up front with four blocks, Danielson had three and Roush two.

Hughes was the team’s top server, going 27-for-29 with three aces, and Daggett served 23-for-26 with one ace. Estabrook was 21-for-22 with four aces and Moore was 17-for-19 with one ace.

Spartans bow to Wolverines in Jefferson semifinals

CEDAR RAPIDS — The Class 2A No. 3 Grundy Center volleyball team went 2-2 at the Cedar Rapids Jefferson Tournament on Saturday, beating one of the three ranked teams it faced.

The Spartans (33-7) defeated Cedar Rapids Jefferson (21-14, 21-8) and 3A No. 10 West Delaware (21-19, 21-11) before falling to 5A No. 2 Ankeny Centennial (21-17, 12-21, 15-8) to close out pool play.

In the semifinal round of bracketed action, Grundy Center was swept by 2A No. 1 Dike-New Hartford, 25-17, 25-19.

Carlie Willis pounded out a whopping 49 kills to lead the Spartan attack. Shirley Monaghan added 17 kills and Kayden Muller had 10 more. Senior setter Ellery Luhring totaled 70 assists on the day.

Defensively, Luhring had 12 blocks at the net, Paige Venenga had six and Willis five. Luhring’s 33 digs also led the way, while libero Lucy Lebo had 26 digs.

Venenga served 38-for-42 with four aces, and Monaghan was 28-for-31. Luhring finished 26-for-28 with two aces, Willis was 23-for-24 with four aces, and Lebo went 21-for-24 with four aces.
