SPORTS SHORTS: West Marshall falls in finale, finds way into playoffs

STATE CENTER — The West Marshall football team limped into the Class 2A state playoffs with a 14-6 loss to Union Community on Friday night.

The Trojans (2-6) still claimed third place in District 6 and earned a postseason berth as the third seed out of the district, ahead of Union (2-6).

West Marshall got most of its 220 yards of offense from Ben Gonzalez, as the junior running back carried 29 times for 203 yards. His 83-yard touchdown dash was the Trojans’ lone score, however.

Union’s Andrew Sadler was 3-for-5 passing for 68 yards, hitting Logan Rosauer for a 24-yard touchdown pass. Ryan DeVries rushed 20 times for 78 yards and a TD for the Knights.

Dillon McMorran led the West Marshall defense with 13 tackles, including two for loss, and one quarterback sack. Caden Pfantz had nine tackles.

The Trojans will travel to face New Hampton (3-5) in the first round of the state football playoffs Friday night at 7 p.m.

East Marshall shut out in loss at Alburnett

ALBURNETT — The East Marshall football team was held off the scoreboard for the fourth time this season, falling 14-0 to Alburnett on Friday night.

The Mustangs (1-7) pitched a second-half shutout of the host Pirates (3-5) but couldn’t reach paydirt themselves. East Marshall was limited to just 22 yards of total offense in suffering its seventh-straight loss.

East Marshall quarterback Jacob Farrington was 2-for-14 passing for 10 yards and an interception. Xavier Slifer had one catch for 13 yards, and he also led the team with 15 yards rushing. Drew Wheater added 12 yards but on 17 carries.

Wheater led the Mustang defense with 10.5 tackles, including two for loss, while Wyatt Stalzer and Johnathan Edel had eight tackles apiece. Cody Weaver and Blake Fisher both recovered fumbles as Alburnett got just 93 yards offensively.

Laken Caves and Shayden Washburn both had TD runs for the Pirates.
