SPORTS SHORTS: Stephen F. Austin stomps Bulldogs 92-68 in Caymans
GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands — Jalil Beaubrun’s 14 points helped Stephen F. Austin defeat Drake 92-68 at the Cayman Islands Classic on Monday.
Beaubrun also contributed six rebounds for the Lumberjacks (4-1). Nana Antwi-Boasiako scored 13 points and AJ Cajuste added 12.
Kevin Overton led the Bulldogs (3-1) in scoring, finishing with 19 points. Atin Wright added 12 points for Drake. Tucker DeVries had 10 points.
Drake football named FCS National Team of the Week
DES MOINES — Fresh off winning the Pioneer Football League title outright, Drake football has been awarded the FCS National Team of the Week.
The Bulldogs (8-3, 8-0) flipped the script this season and completed a perfect run through the Pioneer Football League to earn their first FCS playoff berth. Dorian Boyland scored the game-winning two-yard touchdown with 2:43 left in the game for a 13-9 win at Butler on Saturday, Nov. 18. Fifth-year head coach Todd Stepsis has led Drake on an 11-game league winning streak and first outright PFL title since 2004.
Drake football prepares this week for its first round playoff matchup at North Dakota State inside the Fargodome on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
UNI’s Cook honored with national special teams award
CEDAR FALLS — UNI kicker Matthew Cook has been named the FedEx Ground FCS National Special Teams Player of the Week, as announced on Monday morning.
Cook, a Cedar Falls native, scored nine points on a pair of field goals and three PAT attempts on Saturday in the Panthers’ regular season finale loss to No. 9 North Dakota State. Hitting 19-of-21 field goals in his final collegiate season and a perfect 31-for-31 on PAT kicks, his single-season field goal percentage of 90.4 percent ranks fourth-best in program history.
