BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Javian Davis had 15 points in UAB’s 79-78 overtime victory against Drake on Friday.

Daniel Ortiz’s basket with 54 seconds left in overtime gave UAB a 79-76 lead. Drake’s Atin Wright made two free throws with 35 seconds remaining but missed an off-balance jumper in the final seconds.

Davis added four steals for the Blazers (7-5). Yaxel Lendeborg scored 13 points and added eight rebounds. Ortiz was 4 of 5 shooting (3 for 4 from 3-point range) to finish with 11 points.

Wright finished with 20 points and two steals for the Bulldogs (11-2). Drake also got 19 points and five assists from Tucker DeVries, who got a generous bounce from the rim and the backboard to force overtime with a 3-pointer as time expired at the end of regulation.

“It was disappointing,” Drake head coach Darian DeVries said. “We got into attack mode more in the second half to compete hard and battle back. We put a lot into this game but just weren’t able to come out on top. We will learn from it.”

Darnell Brodie also had 12 points, 15 rebounds and five assists. The Bulldogs saw an eight-game winning streak snapped with the loss.

The Bulldogs will return to action when they resume Missouri Valley Conference play at home against Illinois State on Jan. 2 at 8 p.m. Drake already is 2-0 in the Valley after victories over Valparaiso and Missouri State.
