SPORTS SHORTS: Mustang matmen fall to pair of conference foes

SUMNER — The East Marshall/GMG/Meskwaki wrestling team came up on the short side of a pair of North Iowa Cedar League duals on Thursday night at Sumner-Fredericksburg High School.

The Mustangs (1-3, 1-3) were defeated 56-21 by Class 1A No. 7 Jesup and 31-30 by the host Cougars, losing the latter on tiebreaker criteria.

East Marshall managed just five match wins on the night. Against Jesup, the Mustangs got four bout victories. Class 2A No. 9 Drew Wheater won by fall over Jesup’s Drew Munson at 190 pounds, Wyatt Stalzer scored a first-period pin over Jordan O’Connor at heavyweight, and Jordan Meling capped the dual with a 55-second flattening of Joe Bauler at 126.

Xavier Slifer got the Mustangs’ lone match win against Sumner-Fredericksburg, pinning Brennen Blake at 132. East Marshall benefited from four forfeits. Wheater suffered a 6-4 loss by decision to Kyle Kuhlman, ranked sixth in 1A, in the premier match of the night.

Rosenberger’s heroics lift Trojans to first win

TAMA — Cade Rosenberger’s 3-pointer from the wing as time expired lifted the South Tama boys’ basketball team to a 52-50 victory over Center Point-Urbana on Tuesday night in WaMaC Conference play, snapping the program’s 11-game losing streak.

Rosenberger ran through a double screen and caught an inbounds pass from James Brant, turned and fired the game-winning shot as the buzzer sounded. It was Rosenberger’s only field goal in the game.

Tommy Tyynismaa and Jeremy Dolash led STC (1-1) with 10 points apiece, while Daniel Wiese, Emerson Bridgewater and Brant added nine points apiece.

Hunter Holmes had a game-high 19 points to lead Center Point-Urbana (0-3).

Spartans outlast Rebels in NICL West rivalry

REINBECK — The Grundy Center boys’ basketball team withstood Gladbrook-Reinbeck’s fourth-quarter comeback, beating the Rebels 36-33 in Tuesday’s NICL West Division clash.

The Spartans (2-2, 1-0) were led by Jalen Kirkpatrick’s eight points and eight rebounds. Tiernan Vokes and Colin Gordon added seven points apiece.

Austen Mathern scored 11 points to pace Gladbrook-Reinbeck (1-1, 0-1), and Isaac Clark added nine points.

Redhawks hold off Wolverines in Iowa Star South

TRAER — Josh Dostal scored a team-leading 23 points and the North Tama boys’ basketball team remained unbeaten with a 75-74 win over GMG in Tuesday’s Iowa Star Conference contest.

Kayler Morris made five 3-pointers and finished with 17 points, and Jared Dvorak added 16 points and seven assists for the Redhawks (3-0).

Rider Kupka paced GMG with 23 points, 13 rebounds and five assists. Colin Teske added 13 points, while Jabari Woodbury and Anthony Waters finished with 10 points apiece.

West Marshall caught from behind by PCM

MONROE — The West Marshall boys’ basketball team was victimized by PCM’s fourth-quarter comeback in a 50-38 loss to the Mustangs on Tuesday night.

The Trojans (1-3, 0-2) led 32-28 entering the final quarter before PCM (2-3) powered up a 22-6 advantage in the final frame to win by double-digits.

Gavin VanGorp led PCM with 16 points, while Jacob Wendt and Jack Jungling added 10 points apiece.

Cash Johnston scored 10 points and Owen Siegert had nine to lead the Trojans. Johnston led the way with five rebounds, three steals and three blocked shots, and Siegert also had three steals.

Sienknecht’s 3-pointers propel GMG past North Tama

TRAER — The GMG girls’ basketball team led North Tama by double-digit after the first quarter of its eventual 56-40 triumph over the Redhawks in Tuesday’s Iowa Star Conference South Division showdown.

GMG (4-1) was led by Adelyn Sienknecht with 20 points. She shot 6-of-10 from 3-point range and made one other field goal for her big scoring game.

Jocee Mason and Dylan Mathern chipped in with eight points apiece, and Mathern led the Wolverines with eight steals.

Rylee Ridout piled up 18 points and 17 rebounds to power North Tama (1-2), and Ava Breakenridge had 13 points. The Redhawks were done in by 30 turnovers.

Meskwaki girls make quick work of Colo-NESCO

MESKWAKI SETTLEMENT — Dorothy Bear had 15 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Meskwaki girls’ basketball team to a 45-28 triumph over Colo-NESCO in Tuesday’s Iowa Star Conference South Division clash.

Sophie Shuckahosee added nine points, Sia Bear had seven points, five assists and five steals, and Kalayna White added six points and seven boards for the Warriors (2-2).

Gemma Bower led Colo-NESCO (0-4) with 10 points.

PCM overtakes Trojans in Heart of Iowa hoops

MONROE — The PCM girls’ basketball team pushed past West Marshall in Tuesday’s Heart of Iowa Conference meeting, winning 52-35.

Only three players scored for West Marshall, led by Bella Borgos with 23 points. Lily Zahnd and Shelby Johnston added six points apiece for the Trojans. Zahnd finished with five rebounds, five steals and four assists, while Johnston had seven boards and three steals.

Tori Lindsay led PCM with 19 points and 10 rebounds.

East Marshall’s cold spell continues at South Hardin

ELDORA — East Marshall girls basketball suffered its fourth straight defeat, falling 70-28 to South Hardin in Tuesday’s NICL West Division matchup.

The host Tigers (2-2) got a game-high 18 points from Alli Sheldahl. Ayda Eller added 16 points and Grace Eller had 11 more for South Hardin.

East Marshall (2-4) got half of its points from Morgan Neuroth, who finished with 14. Ava Bringmann added seven points and Makayla Hala hit the team’s only 3-pointer.

Stormin’ Pointers sting South Tama girls, 72-18

CENTER POINT — Class 3A No. 15 Center Point-Urbana held the South Tama girls’ basketball team to single-digit scoring in each quarter of Tuesday’s 72-18 Stormin’ Pointer win in WaMaC Conference action.

Avery Sweeney led Center Point-Urbana (1-3) with 18 points, while Josie Klett chipped in 11 points.

Kayla Heck had nine points to pace South Tama (0-4), and Olivia Hala pitched in with five points off the bench, but the Trojans lost their 26th game in a row dating back to last season.
